Post-Combine Draft Thoughts-- Cornerback...

One of the best, deepest positions in this draft, IMO... lots of options early and late...

Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama... some say he'll have to move to safety in the NFL, that doesn't scare me off; the Boys need safety help too... a certain first round prospect...

Trumaine Johnson, Montana... a big corner to go head to head with the big WRs in the league today, but he might project to safety in the NFL too... looks like a 2nd round prospect right now...

Brandon Boykin, Georgia... as dangerous as a kick returner as he is as a corner, maybe more dangerous... another likely 2nd rounder...

Chase Minnifield, Virginia... one of my cats, his father was an NFL cornerback (Frank Minnifield)... he isn't flashy, but he's fundamentally solid... his current draft grade seems to have him going in the 3rd round, I have a hunch by draft day he'll be a solid 2nd rounder...

Josh Robinson, Central Florida... his draft stock is rising after a very good showing at the Combine... has a stocky build and the speed to play in the NFL... a solid 3rd rounder at this point...

Donnie Fletcher, Boston College... I think he might end up playing safety in the NFL, but he should help you out on special teams as a rookie... probably a 7th round prospect, I could justify "reaching" as high as the 6th round for him...

And I have four prospects that really interest me, who aren't likely to be drafted:

Desmond Marrow, Toledo... another big corner...

Chris Greenwood, Albion... blazing fast, weighs 200 pounds, but of course the level of competition he faced is a legitimate concern...

Greg McCoy, TCU... also quite fast, and a solid contributor on special teams...

Josh Pleasant, Kent State... all of the last 3 prospects can be expected to run the 40 in something under 4.4 seconds, they have the speed to play in the NFL, IMO...

yep and if we sign Carr and then draft Robinson, Bentley and or Fleming in the 3rd and or 4th. Thats pretty good depth.

RObinson might have played him self into the bottom of round two. Fleming and Bentley could both be had in the 3rd and 4th.

Sign Carr; 1st and 2nd round take care of needs, OL and pass rush, then go secondary.

I'm still not giving up on Josh Norman (Coastal Carolina). This is a big, physical CB who can go get the football. His low 40 was 4.50. Corey Webster ran a 4.50 at his pro day. Norman reminds me of Corey Webster. This guy is quick and can move, and he can go get the ball. Plus, he is physical and has length.

Norman still has his pro day. If he can run in the 4.4 range, he will help himself. This guy has safety size and CB skills. NFLDS has him in the 3-4 round range.

Even if you sign a Brandon Carr, I'd consider drafting a player like Norman, too.

No I would be going BPA per need. Going by BPA a drafting a QB or RB in the 1st rould be wrong. If we sign Carr then don't reach for a CB in the 1st. If OL or Pss rusher is higher on your board then take him. You can find depth at CB in the 3rd, good players that can develop into starters. This CB class is deep with good talent. Signing Carr and then spending a 1st on a CB is ok with me, I have no problem if that happens but I don't want to pass on a starting DE or OG that can help me win more now than nest year. I want a starter in the 1st, a player that can come in day one and make a difference.
You sign Carr, then draft a CB in the 1st, that CB is now the #4 CB on the team.

I don't uinderstand how you can set yourself up to fail by drafting good players, that are day one starters, and are high on your draft boards.

All I'm saying is if I have Cox and Kirkpatrick there in the 1st and both are 1 and 2 left atop my board I'm taking Cox since I just signed Carr.

In the 2nd if a OG and a CB is again 1 and 2 atop your board then I will lets coaches choose and go BPA, which one has the most potential and can help me win more games. This team doesn't have many years left to wait for a CB to take over when I already have a starting 3.

I'm not saying draft this position no matter what, just reach for a guy because you need to fill a need, if CB is BPA and no OG or no DE is even close then yes go draft the CB.

I always thought BPA for need was the best way to balance the draft. Never take a guy you are not confident that is worthy of that pick. But unless there is a absolute steal sitting there in a position of strength for a team you go for need as much as you can - or you trade down because if someone like that is sitting there someone else probably wants him bad who needs him.

I watched a few of Vandy's games this year and Hayward was all over the place. Unfortunately, he dropped a few INTs, but at least he defended the pass and kept it away from the WR.....I can actually see him being versatile enough to switch between CB and FS.

I would be quite happy if we picked CB Josh Robinson, CB/SCasey Hayward, and S Kelcie McCray for our secondary.

Yeh...that line of thinking got us Quincy Carter in one draft and who could forget the "three gloves" draft.

He dropped three, two of which would have been pick sixes against Arkansas. I really like him though

He looks like a really good prospect.

He was more or less a shutdown corner at Montana. Montana is FCS, so it was a lower level of competition although Montana usually competes at a pretty high level year in and year. They've sent a few guys to the NFL the last couple of years. In my opinion, he's a better prospect that Jimmy Wilson who was drafted by (and played for) the Dolphins this year.

He's had a couple of run ins with the law. He's missed some games due to injury. HS QB and WR.

I think he's a good prospect in the 2nd-3rd round.
