Not a lot to like here, especially early in the draft, but the cupboard's not entirely bare:

George Iloka, Boise State... he'll go in the 2nd round, I'm guessing...

Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State... looks like a 3rd rounder right now...

Matt Daniels, Duke... to be honest, this guy kind of reminds me of Bill Bates, so naturally he's a particular favorite of mine... I'd draft him in the 6th round...

And some prospects likely to go undrafted:

Corey Mosley, Virginia... the Cavaliers had a very underrated defense, Mosley was the "quarterback" of their secondary...

DeShawn Shead, Portland State... early on, the worst case scenario is that he becomes one of your special teams standouts...

Christian Scott, Texas... I don't understand why Scott isn't rated higher, IMO he was the glue that held the Horns' secondary together and he has great size for the position...

Scouts Inc. believes Jackson may slip a bit because of his combine performance. If so, this guy may be a steal, and well worth a flier in the late middle rounds, round 4 or later since the risk of his being a miss are much easier to take if he is taken on day three. If he shows his butt, we just cut him lose and don't let the door hit him in the behind. Worth the risk, in the right round.

McNeese State S Janzen Jackson

Jackson's 4.64 in the 40 doesn't match up with the top-end closing speed we see on tape. He's been a playmaker in the back end throughout his career, and his 2010 film while at Tennessee shows that clearly. Janzen can be seen in the bowl game against North Carolina getting beaten on a double move, then turning and recovering before locating the ball and showing the hands to bring it in. That's a package few defensive backs have.

However, Janzen (5-11½, 188) is in a somewhat different situation than the other players on his list. Several off-field issues led to his dismissal from the Tennessee program, and teams have concerns about whether he will remain stable and focused on football. Janzen clearly has an early-round skill set on tape, and his workout won't change opinions about that. But it remains to be seen how far he falls because of the red flags surrounding his character. If he drops to Day 3, some team in need of secondary help will get a very good value in terms of football skills.

I like Brandon Taylor.

Lots of upside, ability. Tackling needs work, but that can be coached. He's not scared of contact, just not very good at it.

Give me him in the 4/5th and I think in a couple years, we'd have a starting FS.

Would love Janzen Jackson in the 4th. His dad supposedly reigned him this last year and made him enroll at McNeese State and get his head right. He may be slower than expected but he plays the ball well. He may be light (188 lbs) but he is a willing hitter. Teams trying to avoid Eric Berry in 2009 picked on Jackson and he made them pay. He'd be a starter for us within 2 years.

Why is nearly always that guys that screw up are DB's and WR's?

Because they are so physically gifted yet comparatively physically small (compared to trench guys) that there is no room left for brains.

:laugh2:

I think it just seems that way. They tend to get drafted high and paid a lot, so it gets talked about more but there was that lineman last year that slept with his step sister or something, and several of the UNC players were suspended. Hell, Reggie Bush was getting paid like a pro while at USC.

Kelcie McCray all day long.....ballhawk and a late round steal.

interesting theory. Kind of hard to dispute based on overall evidence

McCray has put together a nice resume.

I'd like to see him perform again at his pro day though.

I thought Janzen Jackson was a lock first round pick when he played at Tennessee. However, he really messed up. If he gets it together, he's better than every safety on Dallas' roster. It isn't even close. This guy is a big time hitter, too. If this guy doesn't totally screw up, he's the best safety in the class. Jackson can cover, get the ball, and knock receivers into next week.
