1#16 DT: Aaron Donald- he drops to Dallas and they run up with the card
2#48 QB: Jimmy Garoppolo- Surprise pick here for the future. Perfect situation. Paying now avoids future emergency/desperation of post-aikman years
3#78 WLB: Telvin Smith: Speed for the D. and a play maker/keep at LB or move him to S-plays Nickle LB
4#115 OG Brandon Thomas: good combine #s. Will compete at for G spot immediately
5#146 OG Russell Bodine

Expecting: DWare takes a pay cut and stays. Ben Bass and Crawford have roles.

All good except the QB. If Romo can't play anymore, then they need to dump his contract which will force them to have a down year because they will have to make other cuts to accommodate the hit from Romo's dead money. If he can't play it would be stupid to keep paying him 20M per season just to avoid 1 down year from dumping his salary. If their going to have a planned down year, then they should be in line to get a top 10 pick which is where most top quality QBs get drafted.

Scenario A:
Romo is healthy.
Garoppolo sits on the bench for at least 2 years. The biggest value of rookie under the CBA is their low rookie contracts. They would be wasting 2 or 3 years of his initial contract.

Scenario B:
Romo is not healthy. They must then dump his salary which is a huge cap hit.
They will have to operate with a lean, non competitive roster in order to accommodate the cap hit.
They are likely to get a top 10 pick after the down year which is the best place to take a franchise QB.

I think bring up a good point. It seems a bit all or nothing in your approach. Wasting may not be the right words. 3 years is a good deal. It's not like the defense is Seattle here.

I'd give and pay Romo two years at that rate. See if can finally get it done. After which if not, cut ties. Garoppolo is small school and not a first rounder. Cost is low. It would balance out. I think you are betting on garoppolo being very successful as a franchise for a 2nd. You could always go Qb again. Kyle should retire. The benefit is there as a back up. More irons in the fire

It is critical under the CBA to get production from draft picks during their initial 4 year rookie contracts. It's almost impossible to field a competitive team under the salary cap without the contributions from players on their initial contracts. If you lose 2 to 3 years out of 4 on his contract, it is a waste. He starts for a year or so and then you have to give him a big contract.

Can't use a 2nd round pick on a guy because you are worried about worst case scenario. Jerry made his bed with the Romo contract and is going to lay in it further once he pushes guaranteed $ further into the future in a couple weeks. You pretty much just have to live with it and do the best you can to win before the contract is up. If Romo can't play at a high level and is still getting paid big $ we are screwed with or without a young QB waiting in the wings.

Ok. You've convinced me. We are all in on Romo.
2-#48 - tre mason RB
Keep him healthy by running the ball better

Wont happen. Jerry has said they like where they are at RB. I love the way Mason runs, but this team wont be going RB this yr.
