There was some talk about Michael Mayer being TE1 and if he's available at 26 the Cowboys should take him. Just wondering post combine what's everyone's thoughts on Big Mike Mayer?

Terrific player. Witten 2.0

Note:
-I wanted the Cowboys to trade back into the late 1st to draft Witten.
- I cussed Parcells when they didn't draft him in the 2nd.

Nothing should have changed for anyone. I didn't expect him to test off the charts. He's a guy who shows out in pads, and produced with a very limited quarterback this past season. I would still take him before any TE in this class.

Still a fan. Yeah he doesn't have elite TE speed but if he ends up being a better blocking version of Dalton Schultz, that's still a really good TE who would be a difference-maker

Dalton Schultz' Combine

6'6" 244 lbs
4.75 40
1.62 10 yard split
32" vert
10'0" broad

Michael Mayer's Combine

6'4" 249 lbs
4.70 40
1.66 10 yard split
31.5" vert
9'10" broad

I see them as pretty comparable athletes.

Or heck, here's one for you.

Dude virtually cloned Mayer's Combine, except for the long speed at the end of the 40. I do want that long speed in a TE, but if I can get 90% of Mayer's juice in the 4th round, I'm not going to bother spending a 1st.

he will not be 1st TE taken,to me he has no 2 before the Combine but i can see some team taking Washington before Mayer with Kincaid going first,

No interest in Mayer at all. If we draft him I guess I could learn to become a fan.

Still have Mayer #1 as he wasn't expected to have elite traits to begin with.

Mayer
Kincaid
Mustgrave
Washington
LaPorta

Give me 1 of these 5 and I'm am stoked. Can 1 get to 58?

There is more to drafting than measurables.

The difference in college game footage is similar to the difference in game footage of Cole Beasly compared to Randy Moss.

I often seen Mayer beat a CB in press coverage with a fake jab step off the line. That's rare for a TE.

He also has that Witten type ability to break the ankles of DBs on option routes.

I still remember watching Witten vs Byron Jones in 1-on-1 drills at training camp. It seemed to defy physics that Witten made the Uber athlete Jones look silly on the vast majority of snaps. To Jones credit he was ready to try again everyday in camp. Also, Jones best attribute as a player was his ability to match-up with opponent TEs.

Musgrave is boom or bust to me.

At least Washington is a guaranteed elite blocker. He'll instantly be a top 5 blocking TE and I expect him to be #1 in his second season. He might be a better blocker than the Cowboys backup OTs.

I was actually impressed with his 4.7 as I thought he’d be closer to 4.8.

He’s a high floor player but just not dynamic enough of an athlete to take in the first IMO.

Mayer is a better football player than athlete. His tape will still get him drafted round 1.

Not much changed.

I don't see value in a first round TE. Mayer was never going to dazzle at the combine. He's got this highest floor of all the TEs but certainly a lower ceiling than say Musgrave or Kincaid or Washington.

If you want a TE that can come in and be the most ready to play right from the start. That's Mayer. If you are looking for a longer term project, someone who could develop into a Kelce game changer? That's likely not Mayer.

I went and watched Mayer more the other day. I was very very meh on him but after watching him more, he’s far better than I gave him credit for. Him and Washington are 1A and 1B for me. Mayer has the highest floor of any Te in this class. He will not be a bust. He is witten 2.0. I’d be more than fine taking him at 26

Just listen to Bobby Belt podcast, only positional offensive coach to attend combine, was our TE coach
