The combine didn’t change much for me with the TE group.
I still think the best, most valuable TE to teams will be Kincaid. The guy is just a real good player that can be a match up problem for teams. We’ve seen him do it for a long time in Utah and, just like Mayer, team’s will know what they’re getting. Once he finally does test, I think it will solidify him as TE1. People get excited right after the combine…. But once the actual draft rolls around, the team’s usually don’t put nearly as much emphasis on the combine testing as they do the interviews and what they’ve put on film.
Kincaid has put a ton of good stuff on film.
Mayer, much like Kincaid, has put a ton of production out there and his testing at the combine isn’t going to dissuade any team from taking him. The teams that love Mayer are still going to love Mayer. He’s a much better blocker than Kincaid but he’s not nearly the threat in the passing game.
To me, Washington is still what he was before the combine: A guy that I can’t help but want in Dallas. His blocking is very, very good, right now. Out of the gate he’ll be one of the best blocking TE’s in the league. Physically, he’s just so long and strong that my imagination takes off when projecting him in a pro passing game. He could be phenomenal and help make your offense one of the most physical offenses in the game… which is something that I, personally want to see. However, he might never do that much in the passing game and you just have one of the best blockers at TE in the NFL. A ton of potential… but also potential to disappoint.
And for me, I just love college production so much that I can’t help but put Kincaid and Mayer in front of Washington… but boy do I want to have big W.
If Dallas is truly going to try to have one of the best rushing offenses in the league and want to run a lot of play action off of that, then I could see them taking a chance on Washington… and if that is the case with what they want to do, I’m all for it.
If not though, then you go Kincaid or Mayer first. Mayer is probably the guy that you want of you want blocking with your receiving right off the bat. All three are guys that I like and I could make a case for any of them in Dallas.
But heck, we don’t really know. The team might be just fine with Ferguson and Hendershot. I’m ready to find out though.
