Post day 2 draft blues

But should the Cowboys use their rankings or ESPN’s? Because if I’m not mistaken ESPN had Travis Fredericks ranked low as well.

Frederick had a top 100 grade from ESPN at least.

This guy we took in the top 100 and has grades below 275.

Not quite the same thing. They got cute. They think they are smarter than everyone else. And when he predictably disappears in a year or two, people will try to pretend they never rationalized a bad pick.

It was just a frustrating night. The franchise spends a lot of time on preparing for the draft so we will need to wait. The final grade will be how these guys play. Although looking at past years when the team goes against the grain in the middle rounds of the draft, they very rarely outsmart other teams and draft experts. They usually fall on their face.

I feel like chasing a CB in the second round really mucked things up. Last year the draft fell to us. This year it didn't and it appeared Dallas was step behind all night.

Joseph looks like a classic boom or bust pick. It is concerning that he only has 9 career starts. He is the type of guy where the front office gets attracted to but never lives up to the billing. If he is not a good starting corner, this draft goes downhill really fast.

At least Dallas drafted some defensive lineman, but both appear to be high character guys with maybe limited upside. Lets wait on both as they appear to have some interesting characteristics. But again, these are the type of players who Dallas has overdrafted in the past as well.

No idea with Wright. That pick better be right. It certainly appears last years 4th in Robinson is already a wasted pick.
I went to bed early after the Golston pick. We were out drafted by teams that were behind us. Teams knew who we were targeting and they jumped us. We selected 5 players so far and have 6 draft picks left. Why didn’t they use this bounty of picks to go get their targets? When you screw up on the draft it sets you back years because your always trying to make up for past mistakes. Last year was a good draft. We got contributions from several selections. When I look at the players picked so far; I say to myself, “who are they going to beat out on this team. DT Woods must be feeling great today because I can’t see anyone replacing him from these picks. CB Wright will be a practice squad player. DE Golston, can he challenge anyone on this team for a spot. The 3 selections in the third will not be on this team long. I’m crossing my fingers on CB Joseph? This draft reminds me of our past special teams draft years ago. Sorry for the rant!

It’s ok. I know how you feel.

frustrating to see good players go by.

I’m not rationalizing the pick. I’m rationalizing the way they go about drafting. People keep bringing up are rankings media outlets have. We don’t listen to ESPN for anything else until it comes to the draft.

I don’t like the picks myself but I haven’t seen any of these guys play to even form a opinion. I hated the Travis Fredericks pick as well.

It’s still utterly perplexing at how they just don’t seem to view DT as important.
Oh they view it. I think we either didn’t pay attention or simply thought the joke of a free agency was just that. A joke. In my mind what they did in free agency had no barring on what they should do in the draft but that was a mistake on my part. Those great value free agents will be starting for the Cowboys.....

I can tell a lot of fans had become attached to certain players during the pre draft process. Guys like Surtain, Horn, Moehrig, Barmore and Milton Williams.

Those guys (Surtain, Moehrig and Milton) were literally picked right before our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks which is what sucks.

But come on, we got 5 new players. Gotta give them and Quinn a chance.

Guys like Sherman, Avril, Chancellor and some other members of the LOBwere all taken rounds 4 or later and I'm sure Seattle fans at that time were confused and frustrated as well.

Gotta just let it go and move on to day 3.

This was the MOST excruciating draft I have EVER watched:

Horn, Surtain, Barmore, Moerhig, Mcneil, Milton...............you nailed them all. We had all the ammo in the world to easily trade up for all these guys. Feeling is that they tried to outsmart EVERYONE and wait for each pick while the rest of the draft knew EXACTLY Who they wanted and kept trading up to get them right out from under them.

Then throw in the possibility that they might have turned down the Bears trade that the NYG pulled off and it gets worse for me. There is no letting this one go. THIS WAS THE DRAFT!!!! And they blew it. They honestly blew it.

Finally a fan who gets it.

This is kind of my feeling too. I saw this in the mock drafts I did....it became a pattern really. If I did not get a corner in the first, it always seemed like I was chasing them and the second round really did not seem like the place to chase. When Grant and Moehrig were in range, we should have made the move up to get one. Much better value there than with Joseph. Third round I would have loved to see them take OL Green from Illinois. Nasty, plays Center and Guard. We have like 8 Tackle candidates and almost nothing at C/G. Conner Williams has not become the guy we hoped for, McGovern seems average at best, Redmond has never been more than below average. So we have LG and C that need another option. Green would have fit the bill. We could have taken him instead of Golston and then probably got Golston at 99 if we really were locked into him.

When you get your targeted player picked not once but 3 times (Surtain, Horn, Moehrig) right in front of you that does not mean you were unlucky. That is a sign you werent prepeared.
Your draft team should know what the needs of other teams are and what they tend to pick.

To pick Seattle as an example is bad. Even if they picked players fans may have been confused by, they clearly made their homwork on them. This cant be said about us. We again took high risk on players. And the Joneses dont learn anything from it.

If you hit on a risky pick it means you were lucky not smart. Risk is controllable but in a very low range. Thats why it is called risk. But the Joneses think they are smarter than everybody else. If you make a mistake once its ok. But to resist to learn from it shows you are either caught in your own ego which makes you incompetent or you are just stupid which makes you incompetent also.

I guess we again will lose good people (McClay, other good players) to FA and the open market. Just because this FO is so bad nobody with talent and ambitions wants to work with them.

1. If you tell me anyone thought Denver would go CB at #9 I'm going to laugh at you.

2. No one knows if Moehrig was actually our guy in round 2. Just because some fans liked him doesn't make that a fact. Lol

3. Even if he was our guy in the 2nd..what would you suggest we do when a team trades in front of us at the last minute? How is a draft team supposed to plan for that? Lol

This post is so ironic it's hilarious. Maybe it's not the Joneses who think they are smarter than everyone else. As if a bunch of other people in the organization didn't spend a ton of time prepping for this draft and taking part in the decisions made. Maybe some fans need to get a grip and look in the mirror. Maybe..

I'm open minded to see how it plays out but goodness they let a lot of good talent go elsewhere for players that would appear to have been available much later. They had the draft capital to really improve. If their selections fail, any other organization would clean house.

I think the majority of zone members could have finished round three with a fine draft just going off a random rankings sheet.

I even watched Jones a few times sitting there appearing to sulk after a few of the picks. Then he noticed the Camera might be on him and he started clapping as if he was pleased with what they just did. There was no hiding they got duped AGAIN with some of these picks.

This was a classic case of EVERYONE knowing what the Joneses wanted and taking big time advantage of it. Joneses are clowns.
