Even though we are only a few days into free agency it seems we have done most of what we wanted. May see another cheap vet signing or 2 but we are mostly done. Despite the many crying and whining on here, we had a nice free agency. Plugged many holes and upgraded our defensive line in a big way.
1st.) Jalen Ramsey CB/SS, FSU- Like Byron Jones, Ramsey plays all over the field his rookie year before eventually become our strong safety.
2nd.) Jonathan Bullard DE, Florida- Left defensive end who will allow Tank to move back to right defensive end which is his natural spot. Great run defender and good pass rusher who can slide inside and play both 1 and 3 tech.
3rd.) Alex Collins RB, Arkansas- Good between the tackles runner who can be a hammer for us on short yardage situations. Can be a bell cow if needed.
4th.) Maliek Collins DT, Nebraska- Interior pass rushing specialist who really only fits as a 3tech in a attacking 4-3 scheme. Can see him falling due to scheme and position limitations as well as DT depth.
4th C.) Eric Murry CB, Minnesota- Zone corner who is not afraid to tackle. Can come in right away and compete to be our 3rd corner.
6th.) Josh Ferguson RB, Illinois- Duel threat scatback who can make defenders miss in so many ways. always looking to make a big play.
Offense
Gonna start off saying i want a QB at 4 but i don't see it happening, At the same time i don't want to draft a mid round QB. If no QB at 4 then lets just see which development QB falls to our 6th round compensatory picks. Maybe Brissett, Cardale Jones, or Driskel will be their.
Not a big fan of the receivers in this draft. Most are slow possession receivers like we already have on our roster except Fuller who i can see going in the later 1st because of the lack of speed in this years receiver class. Don't want an earlier round TE either. Hope locking down Hanna for 3 years helps that.
Drafting 2 running backs may be a stretch but we don't have a backup to McFadden nore do we have a duel threat scat back on roster anymore. Both can be good offensive weapons that will helps us get back to being a playoff team. Alex Collins shouldn't keep us from taking one of the running backs in next years draft if one falls to our 2nd round pick. Can you imagine having a running back tandem of Dalvin Cook, Alex Collins, and Josh Ferguson in 2017?
No reason to take a offensive lineman unless we get a 2nd for Leary. replace him with another offensive lineman. Either a good right tackle prospect who can take job from Free or a versatile interior lineman like Nick Martin.
Defense
This years defensive line depth is just too great not to walk away with 2 players so thats what i targeted. Bullard can start right away at LDE and Collins can come on the field on obvious passing down with his former Nebraska teammate Gregory and bring the pressure.
Secondary was the 2nd focus. This draft sucks when it comes to early cant miss talent. Only 1 player in this years draft could go top 5 in the past few drafts and thats Tunsil. So since no QB then lets take the Safety who has the potential to be another Eric Berry. Not to mention Ramsey has stayed clean in terms of off field issues unlike the other top defensive prospect Bosa.
I hope we are able to switch back to a zone heavy scheme soon because that is what Marinelli loves to run. So taking a scheme fit like Murry would be great instead of passing on him for a 6 foot corner who only excels in man coverage and cant tackle. Actually would love to get Desmond King next year too giving us a secondary of: O Scan, King, and Murry as our starters at corner with Ramsey close to the LOS and Jones free to fly all over the field.
This years group of linebackers is not great unless u need a WILL which we already have one of the best in game and 2 backups in Hitchens and Nzeocha.
