We lost this game because the game management was horrible. Yes, we have a horrible defense. We've had a horrible defense for a while now. Yes, Romo threw two costly interceptions, a situation which seems to find itself among the Cowboys way too often. But the correct management of this game and this is a win. We don't need an all-star team, we don't need A-Aron Rodgers or Peyton Manning, and we don't need AP. We need better management (game and organization).
For instance, if Romo does not throw those two picks and we continue with the second half mantra of "pass lord, pass lord, more pass!" We go 3 and out, or drive the field for a field goal.
If the defense stops GB just once, only one time in the second half, we probably go away with a win.
But ultimately, the Romo picks are avoided with better game management, and we knew, along with the rest of the NFL how bad our defense is and how many injuries we had going in, so it is the responsibility of whoever is managing the game to make the right moves and decisions to win this game.
If we continue running the ball down the defense's throat in the second half, the game trend shows not only would we move down the field more effectively, we would kill the clock, probably put more points on the board, and win this game by not allowing GB to get on the field offensively.
It's kind of like this. You are well aware that the defense that you are trotting out on the field is historically one of the worst defenses to play. So with that in mind, despite some of the arguments on this board about running the ball and it's correlation to winning, given the situation you are in, week in and week out, you play to your strength, but really you want to limit your weakness and the chance it has of being "exposed". These upcoming games I think this needs to be about ball control and taking chances when you create that opportunity, not chance chucking it and acting like nobody knows exactly what play you are going to call.
As with the first half of this game, running the ball was smart. We got some looks at play action(more than I have ever seen from this offense this year), but we kept our weakest unit off the field. That I think is going to be the key to winning the next two games, as it should be well known that both teams will be looking to pass the ball and both will be successful in doing so. The redstanks have a really bad run D, and Dallas should look to capitalize on it, early and often. Run the ball down the D's throat, wear out the defense, open up the passing through the run by play action and just utilizing the personnel on your offense to your advantage. But most importantly, allowing the defense to stay rested, most likely giving them a chance to keep up. Also, more HB draws would be nice, passing every time out of a passing formation and running every time out of a run formation will not yield wins. Also, we need less Austin, more Beasley and Williams. Romo, needs to get rid of the ball earlier on his deep shots, it seems today he was waiting for the WR to get wide open and then under throwing him. Take chance, toss it up and ahead of Dez/Williams and let Dez/Williams beat their man and run to the ball.
This is a team that can win these games, it's just a matter smart game management which seems to be exactly where we are lacking. It's the adjustments in the game you make when you are not at full strength that will garner the respect you want about the decisions you make as a coach. Maybe I'm just being unrealistic, but we don't lose this game if we continue with a plan which kills a clock, tires out the opposing defense and moves the ball. I can't even blame the defense anymore because we are well aware where we are at with that unit, now it is a matter of compensating for that deficiency and moving forward.
There is so much arguing on this board because inside a lot of realize there is a way to win these games, but the stupidity with the red aura seems to be holding us back. With that being said, the season is not done, there is a chance to make these adjustments, the question is, will they happen?
Here's to ending the regular season 2-0, otherwise the egg nog will be on full tilt.
