#Cowboys safety Matt Johnson on Tampa 2: "It’s not super complicated scheme-wise, but it’s super complicated to be great at it."

Matt Johnson: "A lot of people that went through a year like I did last year ended up on the street or somewhere else. I feel very fortunate

sounds like johnson gets it.

i hope he's a player.

I have extremely high hopes for Johnson. I think the guy is going to be a very, very good safety as soon as this season.

Athletically he is excellent for the position. His change of direction is phenomenal for a guy his size and he hits like a truck.

Mentally, he's exactly what you'd want back there.

Add in the fact that he has the natural knack for finding the football and creating turnovers and you have a guy who has a chance to be a really good player. A game changer.

If he is what I think he is, he will be starting this year and making a difference.

Here's hoping that I'm correct.

I have a suspicion you're right, too. At least, it's a good sign to have both CBs talking about him before the pads even come on.

as much as I and all Cowboy fans expect Johnson to be a good safety for us, I actually believe Wilcox will be better. We will see. win-win

I'm with you on Matt Johnson, but Wilcox just may end up surprising us

S's a weird position for us this year. We really have 0 proven players there, and one veteran retread, but I really, really like both Church and Johnson, and agree that Wilcox could be better than one of both of them in a short period of time. I should be a lot more worried about that position group than I am, but I'm just not.

Defensively, I'm more concerned with the young players on the front contributing at a high level because I don't like our young depth there as much. I'll admit I'm still a bit concerned about our scheme, too. But for whatever reason, even though S has been an achilles heel for us for the last 5-6 years or whatever it's been, I'm just not all that concerned about these young players.

I'm in the same boat as you on the safeties. I'm worried about the continued health of Church and Johnson more than anything. But beyond that, I have a completely unjustifiable optimism about safety for us.

You should be concerned about safety. 0 proven starters on the roster, Church and the Great White Hype have injury issues, not only are there no proven starters, there is even less proven depth. Safety is the most unstable and unproven position on the team and it has the potential to ruin the season if these guys don't step up or stay healthy. The Cowboys are taking a very big gamble with these young players.

Would be nice to have depth at a position of concern.

If Cowboys fans aren't screaming about Garrett not giving younger players a fair chance, they're screaming about Garrett "taking a gamble" on young, "unproven" players.

This is true, but the position is an unknown at this time.

Define "unknown." At worst, we have a former starter and a guy who started 7 games last season for Pitts. More likely, one of the two younger guys will step up. So yeah, I guess it is technically "unknown," but just because a position as an "unknown" does not mean you should be concerned about that position.

I actually agreed with you about fans being too critical no matter what, but to answer your question, here are some synonyms for unknown: nameless, no-name, noteless, uncelebrated, unfamous, unknown, unrecognized, unsung. I think many of them apply to our safety corps and yes, time will tell.

Alot of the "worries" that we've all had in the past has slowly been dwindling although obvious concerns have been there especially with lack of depth in certain areas, it never has always been as concerning as past years. I slowly started noticing this when Jason Garrett took over as HC and the mindset of drafting players and how things are ran started changing for the better and not only making great players even better but turning average players into above-average and beyond. The philosophical change, IMO, has been a big part of that especially with what coaching staff is brought in. The drafts since JG, while not everyone always agrees or downright hates it, has been extremely better and seems to hit on more players than not. It seems that depth hasn't been that much of an issue either with how we're bringing in quality RFA and trying to develop in-house.
