who I think will make it from this year's roster to the 2009 roster.

OFFENSE (23):
QB (2): Romo, Johnson
RB (1): MB3
FB (1): Anderson
WR (5): TO, Crayton, Austin, Hurd, Stanback
TE (3): Witten, Fasano, Curtis
OL (9): Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Colombo, Proctor, Free, Marten, McQuistan
LS (1): Ladouceur
K (1): Folk

DEFENSE (24):
DE (4): Spears, Canty, Hatcher, Bowen
DT (2): Ratliff, Johnson
LB (8): Ware, Ellis, James, Ayodele, Burnett, Carpenter, Spencer, Rogers
CB (4): Newman, Henry, Reeves, Ball
S (5): Roy, Hamlin, Davis, Watkins, Brown
P (1): McBriar

So that leaves 6 spots open for next year's roster.....

KEY LOSSES:
RB Julius Jones
FB Oliver Hoyte
WR Terry Glenn
DT Jason Ferguson

We can take care of all of our needs via the draft. We can use our first day to get a RB, CB, and WR. Then spend the 2nd day filling out depth on our OL (especially C), DL, LB, and even QB.

And that's why I'm more in favor of us going after impact players by packaging picks to move up.

Not neccessarily McFadden... but players our scouts have determined are very good and can fit in a need area.

For instance, if we have used our two number one's on something other than a RB and it is late first round and a guy like Ray Rice is falling... then I say use our second and bundle other picks from this year and next year (not a 1st) to move up to late in round 1 to get him.

Come out of the draft with 3 or 4 really good players and not try to work 6th and 7th round picks into this young, talented roster.

Get a few guys that we REALLY like and put them where we need them.

$0.02

good point.........now realize that my roster does not take into account the 2009 cap numbers.

I say we hold onto Ferg at least one more year. A biceps is bad, but entirely recoverable. Keep Tank and Spears, too. I'd bet Tank can pay a little 3-4 end if need be, and Spears is starting to be a factor against the run.

You can never have too many big, talented guys along the D-Line.

On other points:

If Glenn is healthy and can play, we should hold on to him.

Everyone knows Julius is done.

Hoyte is fighting through a neck injury that will require off-season surgery. I'd see if he can come back before dropping him- his best blocking was better than Anderson's, though Cricket improved.

You may want to adjust the post title - I'm not sure I want Brad Johnson on the team in 2009... :laugh2:

I assume letting Hoyte go is just something you randomly pulled out of your ***.

hoyte sucks.....he couldn't lead block againts a peewee league team. anderson showed promise....however, I am not completely sold on him...i would love to draft a bulldozer to block for MB3.....maybe that Schmidt kid from VaTech or WVU, whichever Virginia school it is.

I'll take that as a yes.

At least everyone on the forum.

Kyle Orton is a free agent after 2008. He could probably be had cheap and isn't a bad backup. (Disclaimer, I am a Purdue homer)

WVU isnt a "Virginia School"

its a West Virginia School

please do not couple us with them.........

Schmitt is not a pro player....steroids are not allowed in the NFL

for your flavor id rather just take that ugly boy Painter in the 6th or 7th

or the qb from Deleware if he slips to the third round.

Considering we are 13-2 without much contribution from any of those players I'm not sure you can consider any of them "key loses" if they don't return.

Very true BDC.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Hoyt gone.

Ah, yes you can. Especially a guy in his mid-30's who hasn't played in a year, is no longer a starter and his ouster will clear a little over $2 mill off of the cap.

We'll be active in FA again as well...when you think you're close, that's when it makes sense to pay big bucks for big time players...you can't wait to develop rookies.

Also, I wouldn't expect all the guys you listed to make the team, nor would I expect Hoyte, Glenn, and Ferguson to be gone...both the backups you see returning and these three you see leaving will depend on who we can get in FA and whom we draft. You always look to improve your team through both avenues, and when you can improve, you do it, even if it means letting some pretty good players go.

You must not have seen him play much. He needs to drasticly improve next year to make it in the NFL. He has problems locking on to the first option and then overthrowing them.
