Potential 2009 UFA Qb's are slim pickins'

This website lists potential unrestricted free agents, and just looking at the Qb's listed besides Matt Cassell, Byron Leftwich, and Kurt Warner who will all be resigned by current team, there are some slim pickins. Maybe Jerry should consider Chris Simms and Kyle Boller they are best of 2nd tier; each might be affordable and not sure how many GM's/Coaches think either one could be a bonafide starter. Or perhaps if the Carolina Panthers decide to cut Jake Delhomme after his Romo-esque performance against the Cardinals might be a good pick up too . I remember so many fans wanted Jerry to sign Delhomme before he signed with Carolina.

You'll still have the goofs that want Cowboy's management to move hell & earth to get a QB that can challenge Romo in '09.

2 words...

Fat chance.

Not with that list of UFA QB's, the lack of a 1st round pick and only about $10 mil worth of cap space.

Give it up people.

Romo IS your starter for 2009.

glad you are not Jerry. you would sit on your hands and not do anything to improve this team and force Romo to work and perform to best of his ability. having a good back up QB is essential. talk about a bandwagon fan!

I'd take a flyer on Grossman. Say what you will about him, but at least he has an NFL arm, something you can't say about our back-ups. He's wildly inconsistent, but maybe someone could reign him in as a back-up. He can make all the throws, you just have to teach him which throws he should not attempt. As a back-up, we at least wouldn't have to change our offense if Romo went down. Plus, I think our weapons would make him look better than the sorry excuses for WRs the bears have. Just my .02.

We need a quality back up, for sure, but if anyone seriously thinks that Jerry is going to entertain any real possibilities of signing a guy like, say Warner for instance (You know if the Cards didn't want him back and all), to push Romo for the starting job you're crazy.

There is only 2 people on that entire list that would come in here and honestly be thought of as pushing Romo for the starting job.

Those two are Warner and Cassel and if you think those two options would be coming here cheap then you're nuts. You can't tie tons, and tons, of your cap money up in the QB position just so you can have someone that 'pushes' Romo as the starter.

And beyond that do you people think Romo is stupid enough to believe that who they bring in as the back up is actually going to be pushing him for the job, even if the coaching staff said the new guy was? Romo knows that his 60+ million dollar deal assures him that no one is coming in here and taking his job unless Romo is injured and out for a significant amount of time.

And with our O-Line unless that back ups name is Vince Young I don't really like the chances of a pocket passing, back up, QB's chances to do well here.

Byron Leftwich, Chris Simms, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Patrick Ramsey, in that order...

Leftwich would be roadkill behind our O-line if its not significantly better this year. Ramsey would be having horrible flashbacks to his beatings in Washington too.

While I don't think he's that much of an improvement on our backups, I could easily argue otherwise. For instance:

He's played in a SB and won a CC game among other things. He knows how to manage a game. He's not terrible with TO's. He's been around. He may not get a chance to play elsewhere as a starter. You could do a lot worse. (I'm struggling a little here trying to find nice things to say). He has an adequate arm although Bollinger has a bigger arm. By far. He's not a media clown (he doesn't say stupid stuff in public...at least a lot).

The negatives:

He doesn't seem to be able to find ways to win well enough. He doesn't have a big arm. He can't throw bullets on the 20 yard out. He's been beat up some esp mentally. He's a mediocre starter at best. He throws enough bad passes that it is still a concern. He probably is looking for a place to start. His TD/INT is about equal. His QB rating is not quite 70.

Bollinger is a better bet long term IMO although he's not been in that many games much less big ones.

If Cassell is a FA there is no way that NE is going to be able to keep him. If he is a RFA they will get draft picks but he will be in high demand considering how he played as the season went along.

There are always vet QB's that get cut every year in preseason. This year will be no different.

Haha, that's a good one. Someone that has been on CBZ less than a month calling a poster that has been a Cowboy fan for at least the last 5 years a bandwagon fan. They weren't even good enough to draw fake fans at that time.

A. Draft a guy in the 4th round or later

B. Pick up a flop like Smith or Simms

Pass... he's gonna want to start next year and that 5 second windup throw of his is atrocious.

I'd go for Grossman if he was available. I think the ineptness of the Chicago front office in getting quality WRs for him can be fostered into that equation. Plus not getting anything of value for RB Benson from a few years ago put their offense behind also. They did good with the rookie RB they drafted last April tho, but too little offensive talent has historically haunted the bears.

MC is getting franchised.

as for FA QBs, carr, grossman, fitzpatrick, orlavsky, simms, ramsey, frye all could fit the bill IMO.

Huge difference between getting a good backup and getting somebody of a caliber to push Tony Romo. The former is essential and the latter isn't available anywhere.

Can we please stop pretending there's any evidence Romo doesn't work hard? It's unbelievable how little credibility is needed to start a myth, and how much work it takes to explode one once it grows legs.

I doubt any team signs him as their starter.
