I think everyone drafted after the 4th round was taken to be on the IR or Practice Squad this year, then join the active roster in 2016.

We have examples of that approach already in Ron Leary and Dwayne Harris, and PS/IR guys this year like Ryan Williams and Chris Whaley.

Not all the picks will pan out obviously, but I think its valuable to look at who the late draft picks potentially replace after a year on the Practice Squad in 2015 and how much money that saves us in 2016:

5th Rounder Ryan Russell replaces Jeremy Mincey, who makes 1.75 Million this year.

7th Rounder Mark Nzeocha replaces Kyle Wilber, who makes 770K this year but can get a raise as a FA.

7th Rounder Laurence Gibson replaces Mackenzy Bernadeau, who has a cap hit of 2.8 Million this year

7th Rounder Geoff Swaim replaces James Hanna, who makes 687K this year but figures to get a good raise in FA.

This is actually a pretty good point that I never thought about. However, do all of these guys have legitimate injuries? I don't think we can just store then away on IR if they aren't actually injured by the time the season starts. Unless you're talking about the practice squad.

I don't think they would dummy up an injury the way the NBA does, I think it would mostly be Practice Squad. But they can play tricks with that to incentevise the player to stay on the practice squad. They did small bonuses and salary guarantees with Leary and Ryan Williams, I would imagine they do so with these players also.

I don't think Russ is going to knock Mincey (who had a decent year last season) off the roster.

The other 3?

That could be. The big thing will be how well Gibson (or someone) can play center.

Yeah, let's replace our leading with a 5th round pick...no less, to save less than 2M...sounds brilliant

I don't think he does either, I think Mincey finishes his 9th pro season this year at age 32 and Dallas moves Russell into that spot in 2016 rather than giving Mincey 2 Million or so in salary to return.

The real savings may be Gregory keeping you from having to resign Hardy for whatever he will command next year.

Mincey in 2016 will be 33 and in his 10th season. If you don't want a fallback plan to paying him 2 million a season.....that doesn't sound brilliant.

I doubt all those draft picks make the team, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it.
