We keep focusing on our offensive line issues, and keep speaking of these 'glaring' holes we need to fix. Except we've forgotten exactly how young and potentially dominant our defense is.
We've got a solid group of rookies in Canty (steal), Ware(budding Pro-bowler), Spears(potential stud), Burnett(nothing but upside), Beriault(see Burnett), Ratliff(BP seemed to like him), Stud OLB via draft(potential rookie stud opposite Ware), and a Definite Upgrade at FS via free agency or the draft.
Along with our somewhat experienced players who are on the verge of being at the prime of their career. Williams(can really be explosive w/ decent FS)Newman(shut-down corner, best in the NFC in 06), Henry(played like a pro bowler till the injury), James (fresh off a breakout season)
These guys along with the veteran leadership of Ellis (sack leader for years), Ferguson (when healthy can really stop the run), Glenn (best 3rd/nickel corner in the league)
If we make a few more moves in free agency or the draft and get a stud OLB and a decent FS we can easily have the best defense in the NFL. Our rookies have nowhere to go but up, and our playmakers like Newman and Williams can really thrive if surrounded by solid roleplayers.
In conclusion, we need to quit worrying so much and realize exactly how dangerous our defense can be. Especially after another year in the 3-4 and another year of experience for our young players.
