I was looking through BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1 website, and they have a section on potential FAs at various positions. I thought I would put down some of their rankings at the Center position since it is topical for the team. I put my comments in brackets.

Scott Wells, C, Packers. Age: 31.
Scott Wells is one of the top centers in the NFL. He excels in all areas, and is due for a big contract.

[IMO, not sure if the Packers will let him go.]

Nick Hardwick, C, Chargers, Chargers. Age: 30.
Nick Hardwick is one of the top centers in football, but he told the media recently that he's going to consider retirement this offseason.

[If he really is considering retirement, not the type of guy Garrett would necessarily want to rely on but I'd seriousy consider him assuming his heart is still in the game.]

Chris Myers, C/G, Texans. Age: 30.
Chris Myers has been exceptional as Houston's center, but his value isn't really high as it should be because he doesn't fit with non-zone-blocking teams.

[I think he's a real option, assuming the Texans don't franchise him - which they infact might.]

Dan Koppen, C, Patriots. Age: 32.
Dan Koppen performed very well in 2010, but missed most of 2011 with a fractured fibula. He turns 33 in September, which is the concern.

[Koppen could be a cheaper option for this season. We could draft an OC this year in Day 3, and let him learn behind a veteran like Koppen for 1 year.]

Samson Satele, C, Raiders. Age: 27.
Samson Satele missed one game with a concussion last year, but otherwise had another solid season.

[I think Satele could be an option as well, and he is quite young, so you could sign him to a longer term contract.]

Matt Birk, C, Ravens. Age: 36.
Matt Birk is still getting the job done, but he'll be 36 in July. His skills could quickly erode without warning.

[Maybe for a 1 year deal, but I'd rather go younger.]

Jeff Saturday, C, Colts. Age: 37.
Jeff Saturday is coming off a great season, but the wheels could fall off at any moment because of his age. He'll be worth a 1-year deal though.

[See comment for Birk above.]

Todd McClure, C, Falcons. Age: 35.
Todd McClure turns 35 in February, but he still gets the job done. His skills could erode without warning, however, which is why I'm listing him at just three stars.

Will Montgomery, C/G, Commanders. Age: 29.
Will Montgomery is a good fit in Mike Shanahan's scheme as a lineman who can play guard and center. He's worth more to the Commanders than most other teams, so he should re-sign with them.

[I don't really know enough about him. But his versatility is a positive.]

Casey Wiegmann, C, Chiefs. Age: 39.
The Chiefs will welcome back Casey Wiegmann if he still wants to play, but at 39, his performance could fall off at any point without warning.

[I'd prefer to go younger.]

Mike Pollak, C/G, Colts. Age: 27.
Mike Pollak was in and out of the lineup in 2011 due to inconsistency, but he played well at times. He won't kill you if you have to start him at guard or center.

Are there any other names missing off this list?

I think Koppen and Satele could be viable options, along with Hardwick. I am assuming Wells and Myers re-sign/are franchised by their current teams.

I like the idea of Koppen for 1 year to mentor a young draft pick.

Pretty young offensive line. They could use an experienced leader anchoring at center.

I want this guy:

Samson Satele, C, Raiders. Age: 27

I don't want to spend a dime on a guy that is 30 or older. No more dead money issues should the guy get hurt in his first year like Marco Rivera did. I want a younger center that can give me 5 highly productive years.

The thing about Koppen is the Cowboys may be able to get him cheap enough where they can still afford to pick up a few other guys on the defensive side of the ball.

I doubt he'd cost a bundle.

Plus, he's got valuable playoff experience and should be able to provide leadership on the OL.

Unlike the Packers and Texans, I don't think the Raiders would franchise Satele given their cap situation. (Texans may let Mario go and instead sign Myers.) Satele hopefully hits the open market.

ANYONE........BUT..........COSTA.........

that should be common knowledge but unfortunately common knowledge is too uncommon any more.

I agree, some on here think that Costa will be an all pro after an off season of training with Mike "The Miracle Worker" Woicik. Woicik may be the best in the business at strength and conditioning, but can't do a darn thing about lack of talent.

I think you should never give long term contracts to the following people:

RBs over the age of 25
CBs over the age of 27
LBs/Safeties/WRs/TEs/O and D line over the age of 28
QBs over the age of 30

.........they were dumb enough to trot him out there last year, and we are supposed to believe they won't do it again? Jerrah and his band of arse clowns in the front office don't deserve the benefit of the doubt regarding Costa or any other personnel on this team. Dude couldn't even snap accurately out of the gun: something 95% of college centers do with ease:banghead:

I still think the best option in terms of cost versus production is to hand over the job to Killa Kowalski. He was really good last year and should be even better next year after having spent a year on the team and a year in an offseason professional training program.

He made a huge progression this year. He was a player from a small college (Toledo) so this was a huge upgrade in talent he faced last year as a rookie and he was probably our best overall lineman from what I have seen. He should be much better next year.

I also think there is a decent chance that one of Arkin, Nagy or Costa can play league average OG next year. Costa was close to a league average Center in the second half of the year already although his occasional whiffs in pass blocking are alarming. Those whiffs will be less pronounced at OG so I think he will actually do okay if pressed into service.

My own hopes are that we promote one (Killa), draft one (Glenn, DeCastro or one of the guys projected for the second round) and sign a stopgap vet to give the kids one more year to mature or put in a second draft pick in the 3rd round as this is a deep draft class at OG.

I really hope we end up trading down and drafting one OLB, 1 or 2 CBs and 1 or 2 OGs in the first 3 rounds to fill out this roster. Who we pick where will depend on how the draft plays out. I do not think we are one draft and FA class away from being a realistic contender so I think the FO should avoid overly short-term thinking with our picks and cap dollars.

If there is one place I would like to invest FA cap dollars it is for a pressure player in the front 7. I really hope we don't franchise Spencer as he is not a core player and we need to upgrade his position if we want this defense to take the next step up.

I believe Nagy will be a better than average guard. He was playing well before the injury. I'd like to see FA center added to the mix, and draft (DeCosta/Glenn/Osemele) the opposite guard.

Costa was NOT close to average by the end of the season

He went from truly awful to merely putrid

I really do not want Costa, Nagy or Arkin starting for us this year. Tony deserves better than this. My hopes is for either a vet FA Guard or Center, a high round draft pick at center or guard and letting Kosier and Holland battle it out for the other guard. spot.

I have no confidence that Arkin will make the jump in a shorten off season training program (the new CBA), or that a guy who never started in college is going to somehow become a starter for the Dallas Cowboys. I would rather draft Nagy's ex-College linemates in whatever round they are projected. Remember these are the guys who beat out Nagy in College.

Killer is a good prospect to carry on the gameday roster as a utulity backup. Costa needs to be working at Costco.

Nagy came from wisconsin; and Sdogo confirmed what I have heard which is that Wisconsin has probably the best W/T program in college football and employs former NFL guys in it. Nagy is barely over 300 lbs. It is not likely he can add more than a few more at best. Which makes him too small to play guard. He MIGHT make a good center; but that is about the limit for him.

Not giving up on Arkin or Nagy yet. We gotta give them a chance.
