Anyone in here into powder coating? I just picked up an Eastwood machine as I’m restoring an old day cruiser boat and instead of replacing all the old anodized pieces I’m going 3 part powder coat them. I did my first attempt at powder coating on my side by side changing the colors on it. It was only a single part coat.

I built a small paint booth on the garage with LED lights, and bought a small oven. If I stick with it I’ll end up buying a bigger oven and do some side work. I have a buddy in our Union who has a bike shop and offered to have me do his frames if I decide to move forward.

I bought a small compressor but noticed the 5-15 psi just wasn’t enough for proper coverage, so I got new hoses a water separator for my old compressor and it seems to do the job.

Any advice for a tri coat application? I’ve read to base coat throw it in the oven until it looks wet, pull it out spray the main coat put it back in the over until “wet” pull it back out and spray the clear power, put it back in and bake for 20-40 mins. Is that accurate?

So I overheated my oven and melted the final cure. Soooo back to the drawing board. I might try and do without the base coat. I’m doing this tropical orange and the white base turned one part almost red, so I need to experiment more with it. Also cleaning my gun and switching between 3 different bottles is a pain and super messy.

So grinded down the melted powder coat and sanded it down to smooth it out since I don’t have a sand blaster, stuck the 3 bad parts back in the ultrasonic cleaner to get the grime off. So tomorrow I’m going to repowder them but I think I’m going to lower the heat by 25 degrees and bake it. Also I’m not going to worry about the back side as much since that will be hidden against the dash of the boat.

Good luck!!

So apparently what caused this is issue was the clear coat it was too hot. I need to let the top coat cool after gelling and then apply the clear and bake it for a shorter period of time. All a learning process.
