Practicing blocking field goals

A blocked field goal would have given us the chance to win. I know blocking a field goal is easier said than done. What I wonder about is how much the team practices this. Long field goals should also be more blockable because of their trajectory.

I’m not hating the defense’s guts for not blocking one of the field goals, but I do think the topic is worth discussing. I can’t recall a single blocked field goal or extra point all season. Maybe this team needs to get better at it.

I thought Irving was close on one of the last two. Maybe. It's all a blur now.

Maybe on something shorter you would do that but a field goal that long would just be risking a penalty and another chance.

Crosby barely cleared the goal post on both FG's.

It just wasn't our day. Rodgers, Refs, and Crosby were just not going to give us anything.

I think it's worth asking from a time perspective if it is even worth practicing. The NFL average is only about 2% success rate on blocked kicks. With how the NFL protects long snappers you have to be very careful on rushing the middle, and I believe they have cracked down on loading up one side to rush the kick. Blocked kicks seem to have more to do with an error on the kicking team, or poor weather conditions than anything the defense does.

How about practicing end of half scenarios? Like either try the fair catch kick or make an effort at a punt return.

Years ago the defending team used to station a player back at the goal posts so that if a kick was coming in low, he could jump up and block it away. I haven’t seen that in a very long time. Did the league make that illegal?

I think we should have at least acted like we're going to attempt it to put even more pressure on the kicker. Have Byron Jones lineup and start running up and down
