Philosophy
There are several ideas at work here. First, a team has certain basic needs, but you keep talent, regardless of position. Second, Jerry has learned that ignoring the OL and paying big money for free agents isn't the way to go. Offensive lines must be developed, so we're keeping 10 players at the position. Third, from what I've heard Phillips, Garrett and Stewart say, they will be tailoring their systems to their talent. Applying that, I see a lot more use of fullbacks and multiple WRs than double TE sets.
Why?
• Only two QB: I think it's 50/50 whether we keep two or three. Moore has more talent. Baker has more experience. If we keep three, whichever shows in camp goes on the roster and the other goes on the PS.
• Thompson and not one of the rooks: Thompson may not have shown a lot thus far, but 1) he really hasn't had much opportunity, and 2) he has size and speed you can't teach. He's a superb kick returner too. Neither Battle nor Coleman is more valuable to the team at this point.
• Two FB: See "Philosophy." Anderson is more versatile at the position but Hoyte can play LB in a pinch and is great on special teams.
• Two TE: See "Philosophy." Hannah is on the PS in case of injury.
• Berger at center: The Dolphins hated to lose him and the Cowboys think he has potential. We need a backup center and he's played the position. There's really no room at G.
• Dagunduro: The coaches seem to love him. The backup NT spot will be in constant flux. Stanley had his chance.
• Butler and Ball: Jerry and Wade want to get younger and cheaper at 4+ CB. According to coaches, Butler is the best athlete on the team and Ball really looks like a player. Glenn is getting long in the tooth and will probably be replaced next year. If Reeves or Jones was the guy, the change would've already been made.
• Gramatica: He was the most consistent kicker we've had in years in '06, and while he doesn't generate many touchbacks, his kickoffs are usually closer to the 5 than the 15. I'd love to keep Folk, but there's just not room.
