Well, it is good to be back. The long off season is over and the Cowboys were on TV for me to watch. I just got through watching the game for a second time. So here are my thoughts.

Stadium – Have you ever seen a more beautiful stadium in all of your lives? Oh Goodness Gracious! What a fantastic place to watch a game. To see that game in HD is something else.

Tennessee – They were one of the best teams in the league last year for a reason. The player I was most impressed with on the Titans was Javon Ringer. Looks like he will play a similar role for Tennessee as to what Felix does here in Dallas. As for Vince Young, well, if you read Jennifer Floyd Engle’s column the other day it sure does seem she has him pegged pretty well (as in dysfunctional).

Refs – Well it is pre season for them too. My only gripes were the two poor spots given to Witten and Crayton on Dallas’ second drive. I did chuckle over the “Everybody but the Center” remark.

As for the Cowboys…

My biggest concern is the penalties. You cannot be a running, ball-control offense and have a vast amount of penalties without them biting you in the butt! Dallas was totally dominating one of the best teams in the AFC, yet trail with a minute to go in the half. THIS MUST BE CLEANED UP.

I did see a lot of good things though.

Romo looks to be in sync with all of the receivers (I say that with a cringe on Felix). That pass to Witten, which set up Dallas’ first touchdown, was a thing of beauty. That pass had to be perfect, and it was. Witten was sensational also. Romo also had some good time to throw. So credit the starting offensive line on that.

With so much negativity on all boards concerning Spencer, Carpenter, and Hatcher, I saw good things from all of them. Spencer and Carpenter made quite a play on Chris Johnson and Vince Young respectively when they tried to run outside. Spencer was really all over the place that game. As for Hatcher, besides pressuring the QB once or twice, he gets some credit for the interception by Matt Stewart. Hatcher drew a double team, which left no one to block Octavian. This allowed Octavian to make a play on the ball. I am not ready to give up on any of these guys yet.

Felix and Martellus – Oh Boy! This could be special.

What a nice delayed blitz by Jason Williams. I haven’t seen speed from a Cowboys linebacker like that since Darren Smith back in the mid-90s. Jason is raw though. It will take him some time to get the game slowed down for him.

Jenkins and Scandrick – Getting burned on the touchdown to Gage stunk, but Jenkins did show some good recovery speed breaking up that long pass to Britt. He actually looked back at the ball (thus preventing a Pass Interference call). I did not see anything from Scandrick that wowed me.

Special Teams – This unit did not bring their “A” game. We saw many of the previous flaws from years past. Joe DeComillas has his work cut out for him. Folk’s 49-yard clank was a bit disappointing also.

Final Analysis – This team does look more focused than in years past. However, there is much work to be done. The mentality just seems to be about football. We will see how far that takes them.
