No team is less vanilla and awful to watch in pre-season than Dallas.
This comes from all the way back in Jimmy's time and has filtered down to Garrett after years of seeing guys injured. Now the entire DAL pre-season is essentially walk throughs with the most generic playbook possible. But the past 3 or 4 seasons DAL is simply "embracing the suck" of pre-season.
The good news is this has seemed to lessen key inuries as holding out so many veterans or giving them so few snaps does appear to pay off over time. Hard to get hurt if you don't even travel to the game. Zeke was probably in more risk in Cabo of a bad sunburn than most these 1st teamers were. Double digits of which didn't event travel to San Jose of the game.
The bad news is that had led to some really slow starts for DAL.
DAL lost it's openers 3 years ago evenw ith a 13 win team.
2 years ago they stared 2-3.
Last year well we saw the ugly 1-2 start that blossomed into the despair of 3-5 before the great 7-1 finish to win the division.
This year is interesting because the first 3 games are versus yearly week 1 opponent and bottom fedder NYG. Follow that with a WAS team sans a real QB and then a seemingly tank candidate Miami squad. It'll be pretty hard to start slow this year versus those squads; 2-1 is about as bad as I can legitimately see it getting.
But you almost NEED to pile up wins there.
DAL has to only look at 2017 to understand why.
That 2-3 start robbed the division and they missed the playoffs with a respectable but not good enough 9-7.
With the Eagles looking like a legit playoff team (even after you factor in their age and lack of depth), DAL can not fall behind by a couple games early in this divisonal race and expect to walk into the playoffs.
Week 1 becomes more important and it will be interesting to see how Garrett adjusts as pre-season wears on.
Does he continue to essentially showcase Taco for trade and play 50% of all snaps to guys he knows full well arent on the rposter? Probably. Does he adjust his "process" and thinking for year to year changes or stick to the script? Garrett is very underrated by this fanbase but he most certainly could be accused as a stick to the script guy. Let's all hope Garrett has a plan to start faster this year.
So my only meaningful pre-season thoughts are really and truly that I hope you have all scheduled vacation because this is going to be a long 3 weeks....
And let's hope the team isn't on vacation week 1.
