Pre-season thoughts game 1

No team is less vanilla and awful to watch in pre-season than Dallas.

This comes from all the way back in Jimmy's time and has filtered down to Garrett after years of seeing guys injured. Now the entire DAL pre-season is essentially walk throughs with the most generic playbook possible. But the past 3 or 4 seasons DAL is simply "embracing the suck" of pre-season.

The good news is this has seemed to lessen key inuries as holding out so many veterans or giving them so few snaps does appear to pay off over time. Hard to get hurt if you don't even travel to the game. Zeke was probably in more risk in Cabo of a bad sunburn than most these 1st teamers were. Double digits of which didn't event travel to San Jose of the game.

The bad news is that had led to some really slow starts for DAL.
DAL lost it's openers 3 years ago evenw ith a 13 win team.

2 years ago they stared 2-3.
Last year well we saw the ugly 1-2 start that blossomed into the despair of 3-5 before the great 7-1 finish to win the division.

This year is interesting because the first 3 games are versus yearly week 1 opponent and bottom fedder NYG. Follow that with a WAS team sans a real QB and then a seemingly tank candidate Miami squad. It'll be pretty hard to start slow this year versus those squads; 2-1 is about as bad as I can legitimately see it getting.
But you almost NEED to pile up wins there.
DAL has to only look at 2017 to understand why.
That 2-3 start robbed the division and they missed the playoffs with a respectable but not good enough 9-7.
With the Eagles looking like a legit playoff team (even after you factor in their age and lack of depth), DAL can not fall behind by a couple games early in this divisonal race and expect to walk into the playoffs.

Week 1 becomes more important and it will be interesting to see how Garrett adjusts as pre-season wears on.
Does he continue to essentially showcase Taco for trade and play 50% of all snaps to guys he knows full well arent on the rposter? Probably. Does he adjust his "process" and thinking for year to year changes or stick to the script? Garrett is very underrated by this fanbase but he most certainly could be accused as a stick to the script guy. Let's all hope Garrett has a plan to start faster this year.

So my only meaningful pre-season thoughts are really and truly that I hope you have all scheduled vacation because this is going to be a long 3 weeks....
And let's hope the team isn't on vacation week 1.

I don't care how bland or vanilla or whatever it is, I will watch every play in PS games. I want to see how some of these young players looks. Even if they will be on the practice squad.

I want to be informed of the players, so I can say, my eye test doesn't matter to the team of what it tells me. :lmao:

If it is boring to some, then that is their opinion, to others it is football season of the Dallas Cowboys. And that is fantastic.
If someone is bored, then let them keep their boring opinions for other boring people. Though that will not be the case and is their right to post about it. Therefore we will get the usual comments of the sky is falling on here no matter what. But also we will get we are going to the SB comments.

Me, I am happy football is back and now want to get to the season opener, yes, we all do. But in the meantime, I will enjoy the PS games.

I mean, pre-season is pre-season, but I still would like to see touchdowns from the second and third team offenses. I could've quarterbacked this team better than Mike White.

Dallas needs some momentum going into week one, because they will definitely need it. We don't want a debacle like in Carolina last season just because we play and manage preseason as conservative as possible.

Then go get an agent and get a tryout.

QUESTION...

How can over 1800 college players make themselves available to the NFL every year on the year and we still cant find quality dept on the offensive side of the ball?

I am bullish on Donovan Wilson. Granted, the bar he needs to clear is Jeff Heath.............

Everyone keeps saying the first three are winnable, even without Zeke and that may be true but any coach will tell they are always nervous about the first game or two coz they have no idea how their team will response to offseason adjustments. Our D doesn't concern me at all. It's the offense w/o Zeke will likely get no respect for the running game. Without the threat of Zeke, we are damn near one dimensional before the game even starts or that's the way defen coor will see us until proven otherwise. Bottom line, I'm not saying we can't those games but I don't see wins as a cake-walk or automatic w/o Zeke.

Hell notice even Garrett admitted last week we're long ways off from ready for the season.

I don't expect JG to change anything. It's a rerun with this dude. Praise this guy all you want, but just look at him and what he does on the sideline...nothing about him says SB winning HC.

Taco should make the roster now with the suspensions, and hopefully things are starting to click for him.

Pretty low bar. But can the coaches see over that bar?

I think Wilson can get there, just needs that game experience.

Does any HC have something that says he is a SB winning coach. If so, would all teams be going after them.
What does one actually look like?
Are you going to tell us that Pederson looked like a SB winning coach after he was hire?

oh i watch too ... and feel sad inside.

side notes: DAL used to find UDFA gold regularly back when they had a bad team with zero depth.
Now they are doing far less of that because the starters are good and there are very few avilable roster psots. Agents and players know this so don't come here looking for spots.
Guys like Alfred Morris are here to get in shape and get some film for other teams after cuts are made.

End of day you can't have everything but you need to try to get better at everything all the time. See NE.

The only thing there was to take away from that game was the Cowboys do not have a backup quarterback.

I missed the electricity that usually feel preseason or not. It was Zero Energy Saturday night. I get that. I just don't want to come out of the gate slow this season

After Pedrsen learned from his mistakes and grew a pair (in his 2nd season not his 9th). A SB winning HC looks like a guy who gets ish done instead of fiddling with his headset and spitting. Where's the growth? PHI HC grew that's why he won.
