I understand trying to find a precedent, but I don't think there is one.

Yesterday's event wasn't just another dirty hit. It wasn't the use of a "football action" (e.g., a hit or tackle) inappropriately. It was worse than a punch to a groin, too.

You guys are killing me. Martin's antics were not of a 'football action' either. (that would be reserved to what Joe 'Turkey' Jones did to Terry Bradshaw in the 70s). It was a deliberate and premeditated attempt to injure, and succeeded. If you saw McMahon go head first into the turf, you could have swore he could have broken his neck.

If you can go on the premise that Haynesworth 'could' have blinded Gurode, you have to allow as much to Martin 'could' have broken McMahon's neck.

Martin didn't get near enough for what he did. Hopefully, a new precedent will be established in Haynesworth's case.

In all honesty, I think a game suspension for every stitch in Gurode's head (30+) ought to be about right as punishment.

well, i do agree MCMAHON (got it now) getting thrown down is close to what haynesworth did. i do see both as being "non-football" and just blatant attacks in an already rough game. it's all coming back to me now and thankfully (as i really couldn't remember never liking favre) my memory is putting the pieces back into place.

there's no room in the NFL for late / intentionally cheap hits. period. it's sad to think that it was only 2 games for the mcmahon slam because that does tend to make you wonder about what will happen to haynesworth.

4 games isn't enough. the rest of the year will be argued "too harsh" but - in the overall scheme of things the rest of the year would work fine for me. someone pointed out to me that all the former players who are now announcers *ALL* asked for a huge penalty if not just an arrest on the field. those who've not played are more in debates about what's fair and what isn't.

I like the way you think Dr_Hefley!

The more I think about it the more I think the league WILL decide to make a statement with this one and give him a heftier punishment than I originally thought.

My reasoning behind this is that the Titans are going no where anyway so it really won't matter if they lose their best DL for the season. It will give them a chance to play Vince Young all year and not worry about the outcome as their season is already in the tank.

Suspension for the rest of the season would serve everyone's purposes very well I think.

I do like the 30 games though. Someone several years ago submitted that the Broncos OL who routinely took out guys' knees should be suspended for as long as the injured player was out (all year in at least a couple of cases) PLUS whatever the actual punishment was (2 or 4 games & a fine).

I like that idea a lot for situations like this.
