Sure, and the Vegas oddsmakers strictly make their odds to even out the betting either way. So, the odds are mostly based on what the team did last season. That's why it's often inaccurate.

Back in the 70s, the sharps figured out that the sportsbooks were doing jsut what you describe. balancing the odds for equal action from the most people. But then the sharks started destroying them for big money.

The public is easy to predict. They like favorites and popular teams. To get a 50/50 split, the books had to inflate point spreads to tempt people to take the dog.

The sharps would just wait for the books to bloat the spread to a crazy number, drop massive bets on the dogs, and rob them blind. The odds didn't reflect who would win, but who the books wanted action on.

Before computers and syndicates came along, books got away with it. But now, they make lines as accurate as possible. They rely on AI to do the math and just cash in on regular joe's making bad picks and the “juice” (the built in tax on all payouts). That juice is the golden ticket for them and makes the entire thing darn near foolproof.

They don't care who wins because their software automatically shifts lines and flags sharps instantly. They are fine losing some individual bets because now, more than ever, the house always wins.

9-8 is my vote. They appear to be better than that but I need to see it to believe it.

Right there with you, DC. 10-7 or 9-8, because the schedule is tough. A new DC, a lot of new defensive players (LBs & secondary not proven), o-line still suspect, and the pundits have already proclaimed the Cowboys to be a real contender for the Superbowl (oh, the pressure).

Couple this with a seemingly tough schedule and this adds up to...about 9-8, and hoping that's enough to make the playoffs.
