Prepare for the 2015 QB Class to be among worst in years

The Buccaneers and Jets are in desperate need for a new quarterback of the future. The Titans, Commanders and Rams wouldn’t mind having an option in the top-10 build their franchises around. And the Saints, Texans, Bills and Broncos all could be looking for a quarterback to groom with an eye towards the future.

But for all of those teams, it may be the worst year to draft a quarterback based on college film evaluation in the last ten years, regardless of which round they choose to look to.

Mariota or Bust

The Heisman trophy has received the bulk of the NFL Draft attention this year thanks to his already-reached stardom, production in the Oregon offense, and being the clear quarterback every draft fan and non-fan already knows.

But even Mariota isn’t without concerns. His character won’t be an issue in the draft process, but the offense he played in might be. A short-area, quick-based offense lead to his production, but doesn’t show top-level quarterback prospect upside. And while his size and arm strength allows him to stretch the field, his downfield placement and accuracy leaves much to be desired.

After the juniors, the 2015 quarterback class is as weak as there’s been in NFL draft history. More well-known names like Bryce Petty of Baylor, Sean Mannion of Oregon State and Shane Carden of East Carolina don’t meet what NFL teams are looking for in the top-100 picks, and it wouldn’t be surprising if many teams have a few or all three of those as late-round/undrafted graded quarterbacks.

Petty’s offensive system concerns, struggles against top-talent and lacklusterplacement/decision-making on secondary and downfield reads are what he’ll have to show improvement in during the Senior Bowl. Mannion’s size and pocket passing upside will intrigue, but he’s been far too inconsistent to be viewed as more than a late-round development type. And Carden’s production, quick release and short-to-mid area placement is a plus, his lack of arm strength and struggles to adjust under pressure in the pocket may limit which teams want him.

Yikes.

I wouldn't touch one. If I had the top pick I would go Leonard williams. The titans and bucs will both be picking top 5 most likely next year again no matter who they pick this year. So build the team with the best players.

The only QB in this entire draft that looks like he could be a day one starter to me is Winston & I surely wouldnt draft him because of how he acts asa a person. Everyon else INCLUDING Mariota look like they need to sit behind an established vet for atleast a year or two. Not to say guys like Mariota, Hundley, Carden, & Petty wont be any good, I just think they need to develop behind someone in the NFL first.

The 2013 draft was worse. These were the QBs drafted.

E.J. Manuel
Geno Smith
Mike Glennon
Matt Barkley
Ryan Nassib
Tyler Wilson
Landry Jones
Brad Sorensen
Zac Dysert
B.J. Daniels
Sean Renfree

Or how about 2010?

Sam Bradford
Tim Tebow
Jimmy Clausen
Colt McCoy
Mike Kafka
John Skelton
Jonathan Crompton
Rusty Smith
Dan LeFevour
Tony Pike
Levi Brown
Sean Canfield
Zac Robinson

I'll take my chances with these guys in 2015 over those two previous groups.

I'm starting to get the vibe unless there is a big influx of Jrs in the next week the whole class in general might be pretty spotty. Buyer beware:eek:

Sounds like we could get a decent prospect late in the draft.

Outside of Luck, Wilson, and maybe Kaepernik, there hasn't really been much talent available in the draft these past several years. Or, at least not much that I can recall.

I wonder if it might be connected to the widening differences between the college and pro styles. The colleges are trending more toward the read-option, ability to run, and first-read throw offense. In the next few years, it might be harder and harder to find the prototypical QB the NFL desires right now. Only Luck has been the type of QB the NFL considers the gold standard. But, even he has a lot of scramble in him and would have probably been successful in either style.

The NFL is going to get what the colleges give them. And that is more of the Bryce Pettys and Manziels and Griffins and Wilsons and Kaepernicks.

Thank you.

I mean, there are 2-3 QBs better than any that were drafted in 2013.
I can agree that there may not be much depth this year though.
I guess time will tell.

On phily sports radio all they are talking about is trading the farm to move up and get Mariota like the Commanders did to get Griffin.

Its not good but I think there are bright spots that will make it much better then 2013 and 2010. I think Grayson really shows up at the Senior Bowl and improves his stock. I think he will be a top 60 pick and could wind up the the top pro out of this draft.

Ive always been a fan of Hundleys. I think he has top 5 talent and has his head on straight. For whatever reason his game just didnt develop into what you want from a top 5 pick. I think he is a good pick for a team in the late first willing to sit a QB for a year or two

Is there even such a thing as a strong QB draft class? When's the last more than 2-3 QB's drafted in the same year have ever done anything significant?

2005 is the last one I really recall.

2012 looked good after there rookies years, but RG3 has tanked since then and Foles got exposed.

Is Mariotta a better prospect than RG3? no and not even close.I have huge doubt on Mariotta ever amounting to anything and scared away by Winston ..

The only QB who has a chance to be a great QB is Winston but he had a ton of maturity issues

Complete crap shoot IMO
