Thankfully they can get out of the contract after 2025.
That means we'll probably tank next year too. We should have a top five pick this year and hopefully we can land a franchise quarterback. We haven't had one since aikman. Romo was solid but was he really a franchise quarterback? I don't know.

Why did we extend Dak again?
Mainly because our FO isn't creative enough to come up with another solution. We've never been ready for a qb transition. The fact we got even serviceable qb play out of an undrafted and a 4th round rookie is amazing.

Can you elaborate on this?
His 2025 salary is fully guaranteed at 47.7 mil with a 42.1 mil prorated signing bonus (89.9 mil cap hit). In the 2026 offseason, 0% of his salary is guaranteed with a base salary of 40 mil and a 27.7 mil prorated signing bonus with a total cap number of 67.7 mil. If you post June 1st cut him, you save 40 mil and have 27.7 mil in dead money (from the prorated signing bonus). So you'll have dead money from the contract all the way into 2028, but you could realistically move on in the 2026 offseason if you draft a young QB.

Sans 2020 when he wrecked his leg and played in 5 games he's never had a losing season so I understand why he wouldn't panic as he's never experienced a full down season in the NFL.

However, he has to be alarmed on how he and his team have been out matched in 3 out of 6 games to start the season. There is more at the root than just Dak who hasn't gotten much help, but he has drastically underperformed.

Dak is panicking. He just can’t say it because it’s not the professional thing to say. He knows this roster sucks to high Heaven and that he doesn’t have anywhere near the talent to make up for the shortfall in depth and talent that, at least partially, resulted from his bloated contract. Jimmy says the league has a QB salary problem and he’s not wrong. For me it makes the NFL harder to follow as the fan I’ve always been. You can’t pay average to above average QBs elite money just because they are QBs. When you do that you have effectively doomed a roster. I’d hate to draft an above average QB who plays well in the rookie window because I know his first contract after his rookie tenure is going to handcuff my team and likely make them worse. It has to stop. The league really has to do something about it.

Of course, QBs like Dak could put a priority on winning a SB over and above resetting the FA market for QBs. That’s a long shot obviously. I’m interested, nonetheless, to see what Purdy signs for next year.
Very well said. It is an issue and makes the game not as fun to watch or as interesting to watch. Jerry almost did the right thing with Dak. At least now he could say, 11 more games and get a new QB in here. Or just for giggles see what Lance can do with 11 games, now it’s 4 more years of Dak. Both of Dak’s contracts are in the top 5-7 of Jerry and Stephen’s mistakes.

Would be nice if our Oline could block. Zack Martin is one of the highest paid Guards in the NFL, yet got smoked by McNeil repeatedly all game long. But, hey, let's be lazy and unfair and blast Dak for that.
We've been saying that eventually Dak will have to play for an offensive line like this. You just can't maintain the kind of line that Dak is used to playing under forever. That said, we've had lot worst lines than the current one; it isn't even close to being one of the worst.

Oh Dak, but you do. You know why? Because we can't afford to bring in the pieces needed to compensate for when you don't. This is all on you big guy.
They ABSOLUTELY have the $$$ to bring in other talent - they’re choosing NOT to. Even with Dak’s Cap Hit next year, they could have over $50M in Cap Space WITHOUT touching his contract. They could’ve had the same $20+M they have right now BEFORE FA had they just given CeeDee and Dak what they ultimately caved in and gave them anyway. This is on the FO

Thanks.. so we aren’t as doomed as I originally thought
