Preseason Game 2 reactions (and overreactions)

We need to look at trading some of our players-is there a market for them-I am thinking Howell and Mingo as a couple of possibilities. Won't get much but still welcome draft capital

I am so confused about this roster now. This will be interesting. How many can we stash on PUP? Because not many are going to get through waivers.
Can't stash any on PUP. even a TC practice, they can't be put on PUP.
Must be on PUP or NFI before TC starts to be on PUP at the start of the season.

Things I think I know, but probably don't.

Milton established himself as QB 2. But must follow up next week with another strong performance. Howell Could flip that otherwise.
RB position is great to see the competition. I have Williams, Davis, Luke. Will they keep another? If so I like Izzy or Blue. Even though Blue nor Mafah showed me a lot to keep either.

WR is another tough one. Brown and Mingo are reason why they keep 6 WR's. Therefore go short at RB. Turpin is in his last year on his contract. I would not mind if he was traded.

OL depth a concern. But I am bot as concerned as some may be. These guys are all 2nd, 3rd players. They will not be on the field at the same time. Put one of them with the starters, and the can be ok.

As for defense.

Nice to see our depth is comparable or better than other teams depth.
Usually the entire team is out played.
This year they seem to know their assignments. looks crisp, and flow to the ball well.

Parker's defense looks as what we are hoping for. But yes, all vanilla stuff on both sides.

Some players made plays we want to see.
Barham, Overton late in the game. Williams was making plays late in the game.
But why was he out there so late. I don't take is as an indication he is on the bubble. I think they just planned it that way.

Revel looked good.

Coaching looked good.

ST's looked better than against Seattle. One play in the 2nd half they let a runback go further than it should. But the opponents make good plays at times too. Can't make a stop every time.

I don't know if I'd say Revel looked awesome. He had the illegal contact penalty and on the interception, the receiver tripped. He was in the right place at the right time to make the interception, though.

Barham looked like he's going to be a beast.

Both Mingo and Brown had shining moments at receiver.

This was the best I've seen Jay Toia look since he's been here, and Overton got him a sack. I've liked what I've seen overall of the backup interior defensive linemen in these two games.
Really good observation on all points

Davis secured RB2 and Joe Milton is the favorite for the backup QB spot. Not that Howell has looked bad by any means, but Milton looks calm, confident, and as if the game is slowing down for him. Jobs his to lose.

I think we could end up keeping 6 WRs. Mingo and Brown made cases to keep them. Maybe one gets traded for a better CB4 because i don't like the depth at corner right now.

Shelton man. Usually i like to show patience with rookies but idk about this one. Put him on IR and just let him lift weights with a strength and conditioning coach all year. Kids getting dominated by 3rd string linemen.

Barham is vicious. Kid looked like he was built in a lab to play MLB.
I didnt see the game...and it's good to hear you think Malik Davis secure #2RB position. But is Malik Davis a true #2 RB that can step up and take the hits and stay healthy if Williams goes down... Just curious if you think the Cowboys are in the trade market for a RB#2 or not....Personally, I think Malik Davis is a good #3 as I view RB#2 as someone that can step up for 17games if Williams get hurts.

I did not say Blue was terrible. He had some good runs when there was an open lane for him to run through.

Right now, I think RB1 and RB2 are firmly set, but RB3 is still up in the air.

I really hope one of them (any of them) step up before the regular season gets here because we may need them at some point.
So your set on Williams and Davis being your RB#1 an #2...interesting....do you see the Cowboys trying to upgrade the RB position in via the waiver wire or trade. Just not sure about long term implications of Davis as the #2.

Davis showed some power and speed, quickness.
Blue showed some quickness and burst, had a few hurdles to gain extra yards. But has no power to drive through blocks. But did better than last week at it.
Did not see much from Mafah.
Abanakanda has some burst as well, showed a little bit of power, but not much more than Blue.

Blue got a lot of snaps. Average about 5.0 per carry.

To me Davis still stands out as RB #2.
But yes if something happens to Williams. Then can any of the RB's step up.

Brian S. likes what he sees in the RB group from what he said on the pregame show.

Looked dominant at times on both sides of the ball.

Play like that for a full regular season and my long dormant optimism would return.

I get that some people are fans of Blue but honestly, I just don't see anything special in him. I have a feeling that if he didn't play for Texas, most fans wouldn't be supporting him.
Agreed. He looks very ordinary and I believe he’s already got a rep for not holding onto the ball. His best work looks to come against second and third teamers.

The bias of preseason commentators makes it hard to watch. For instance, when Kuntz went up the middle and got helmet to helmet contact (after missing a perfectly thrown ball), the commentators were acting like it was a bad call. On the Revel interception, they credited Revel with a great play, rather than admit their QB threw the ball to a man who was already on the ground.
Etc, etc, etc.
