Preseason: Regular season success indicator?

I remember that we never, or almost never, won a preseason game when we were winning SBs. We all knew that Jimmy just used them to evaluate the bottom of the roster.
However, much has changed since then, especially free agency which has had a dramatic effect on depth. Also, a number of teams have been added since then...Jax, Carolina, Houston....which only further dilutes the talent pool.
My question for the board is:
Has preseason success changed as any kind of indicator for regular season success in recent years? Is preseason success a better indicator of regular season success now? no different as an indicator? or less an indicator?

It seems to me that, merely a hunch here, the better teams during the regular season win most of their preseason games...at least at a higher level of correlation than in the past.
Thoughts?

bubba on ES thinks that since we've played well in the preseason we WON'T be good, but since the Commanders have played badly in the preseason, they WILL play well.

^^ superior Commander logic

"Bubba from ES" and "logic" are simply two things that should never been seen together.

It depends on what you define as "success"

Success in terms of winning the games? Meaningless - absolutely.

The success we're having is completely different. We're having the type of success with our first team that screams dominance, so far. Has our first team defense allowed a single point? We've shown that should teams stack up against the run on us, we can pass on them at will. And this is without our #1 receiver, and our #3 on the gimp. There has been an intensity level from the defense that I've personally never noticed before. We've seen that our backup QB situation is passable.

If we had seen all that, and lost both games, it would still be encouraging. However, had we not seen that, and won both, it would just be false hope.

Take the CAR - MIA game last night. Miami was clearly the better team all night. Carolina returned a kick for the win. I'm sure Miami fans have reason for lots of encouragement from such a strong showing against a legit NFC contender.

The only time that I "count" a preseason game is while the starters are in. Such as, if the Cowboys were up by a score of 10-3 with the starters, I won't care if the final is 20-10 the other guys.

I do concern myself with 2nd string vs. 2nd string due to the fact that they are the 1st team backups.

I really don't see a big difference in present vs. past beyond that.

I agree with most of the statements here. I think how your first team plays is most important. Which i think we've seen enough of. I don't want to see Glenn or Drew out there too much more. Unless TO comes back in the final game i'd like to Bledsoe on the field with him for a quarter or so.
I'd like to see Jones get some more carries.

Preseason doesn't mean anything to me. It's all about evaluation and preparation. It’s very vanilla. However, I do put a little more credence in the last preseason game.

I think coaches usually put the most into the 3rd game and the fourth they pretty much mail in...decisions have been made for the most part, etc.

Unless the words "not having any" are written somewhere in between "Bubba from ES" and "logic". ;)

Depends on the coach and their particular approach to these games. Some use them to work on various things and evaluate talent that has a shot at their roster. Other coaches feel a couple of preseason wins help towards building momentum heading into the real games.

The Colts, for example, have lost their last eight exhibition games. Joe Gibbs is notorious for putting little time and effort into the Skins preseason schedule - even during their Super Bowl years.

Bill Parcells, on the other hand, wants to win every game his team takes part in. Yes, these games included.
