If he said that, I lost a little respect for the man. If he cannot figure out the importance of protecting the ball, he shouldn't even be playing QB.

It is in no way similar to a punt.

Dallas was at the 37, Baltimore took the field at their 49. So, unless Romo expected Dallas to fail converting that 3rd down followed by a 14 yard punt, he's just running his mouth.

Furthermore, the Ravens had used a timeout just before that play. If Dallas were to run the ball and not get the 1st, Baltimore is left with 1 timeout and probably 30 seconds starting at wherever the punt had put the Ravens.

And more than anything, Romo saying that is pretty much him saying "we were going to punt anyway". No confidence at all. 2 yards and this guy thinks its okay to throw that INT because Dallas would have punted anyway.
