I loved watching Preston play, he was money on third downs for us. :starspin

This was a guy with good hands. Not good hands for a running back, but good hands, period. Put Allstate to shame ;).

That picture brings back a great memory. When he made that catch I had no doubt we would win and what made it special is we had tickets to go to the SB only question was would it be Dallas or LA we would see.

Money on third down. Better runner than he's remembered for. The first third down man.

Yep. Loved watching him play. In Cowboys Stadium pro shop just last weekend, I asked the register lady, "so where are the #26 Pearson throwback jerseys?"

"You mean #88?"

"No, #26, Preston Pearson!"

....crickets....she had no clue who I was talking about.

I worked with Preston a few times many years ago and he is a really nice, well-spoken guy...

Dallas claimed him for $100 off waivers from Pittsburgh. That's what you call bang for the buck...

Good thing they didn't have replay back then, because the catch would have been overturned. Here's another memorable one:

Preston Pearson was remarkably good as a 3rd down back before the nfl knew what a 3rd down back was. He defined the position and was a complete steal off waivers. Preston remains a Cowboys fan today which I think is awesome as well!

Dallas beat the Rams that day 37 to 7 so while that play sealed the deal I think we could have overcome it had it been ruled the other way

Only good thing we ever got out of Pittsburgh. (TD was not from Pittsburgh).

Him or Ernie Stautner (albeit only as a coach).

I loved Preston as a kid, but watch the last minute of SB X as Roger is running the 2 minute offense trying to win the game for us. Preston catches the ball around the 45 yard line as I recall and fro some reason doesn't get out of bounds. Precious time runs off and we end up losing the game.

When I watched that I realized that in many ways the game is much more efficient and crisp today.

True but you figure Dallas should not have even made the SB that year. We were big underdog vs Minn but due to the Hail Mary we won, then to travel to LA and play the Rams we again went in as big under dogs

I've had the pleasure of working with him 8 times a year for the past 6 years, and he's a great man. A pretty good golfer too. I'm glad I can call him a friend.

By the way, he's always held that his brother was a superior athlete to him all throughout highschool, and would've gone on to be a great college and pro athlete, had it not been for a mental illness he suffered from.

Preston Pearson was so important to those late 70's Cowboys teams. He had excellent hands, but IMO,his strength was the way he ran pass patterns. No LB could cover those moves, and Coach Landry revolutionized football with his use of Preston as the 3rd down back.He was a huge key to that 1975 Cinderella team, and his 3 TD game at LA was dominating. In that 1979 season finale against the Skins,he was unstoppable on that winning drive-Monte Coleman had no chance against him.The fact that he was obtained for a mere $100 is hard to believe!

One of my dad's co-workers had played football at Illinois with Preston Pearson, and really liked him. That lead to me following his career, Colts -> Steelers -> Cowboys, and I was real happy when he ended up with the Cowboys. When he came out with his Cowboys Kerchief line, I bought a bunch to give out as presents (My mother still wears hers on game days!), and mentioned the reasons I'd followed his NFL career in the order letter. A few weeks later, I got a handwritten Christmas card from him, thanking me for the order, and for rooting for him. Great guy! Everything I have seen relating to him has reinforced that impression.

He really was the first third down back. Kudos to him, and to Landry, the innovator. Nice to see the retrospective.

Not bad for a 12th round draft pick!
