Prevent defense

Not a fan of prevent unless you up by a couple of score or more very late in the game.
Even then, it can bite you. I think it was the Giants against Chicago last week that the Giants were ahead by 10 points with about 2:30 to play and ended up going to overtime before they (NY) luckily got the win. That's what a crappy prevent defense will do for you.

Sure it can but if I'm up by a good margin late in the game, I would have safeties back not allowing anything deep and CB off the line and making the tackles. I'm not much into the 3 man rush aspect of a true prevent defense but I sure do not want to give up 1 play for a quick TD when I know time in their enemy

I hate the three man rush, too. And I totally get what you're saying about giving up the quick score...I mean that's one of the main premises behind playing a prevent...make them take time off the clock. That said, when the prevent leads to a relatively quick score (as I'v seen happen many times), then someone really needs to examine said "prevent" defense. Like you stated though, if a team is up by a good margin (three possessions), then by all means play it. Just make them eat up some time/burn TO's in the process.

This is the prime example why you never play the prevent defense.

The 9ers ran on almost every play during that drive to The Catch as Dallas played the prevent defense.

True and now with the way kickoffs are done, the odds of getting an onside kick is lower now. Still can happen but much harder without the running start.

I take it you didn't watch the Georgia/ALA game? There's actually no doubting, they did.
I saw the game. Alabama scored and won. I don't think it's because Georgia went into prevent. Sometimes the other team scores no matter what you do.

You're right about the onside kick. I think it was in the Giants/Bears game that I referenced earlier, the announcer stated that onside kicks had been successful something like 3 in 34 or 35 this year. The success rate has always been low, but it's even harder now.

I don't know about you guys but it infuriates me when the defense has shut a team down for the entire game and the team goes into prevent mode (way too soft prevent I might add) and just let's a team run down the field like a knife through hot butter.

I realize they are trading yards for time but you have to make them at least earn it and not just give the other team an easy path and chunk yards.

you give the easier underneath so you can take away the deep stuff. Otherwise teams start taking more shots downfield and if your caught in man coverage and get beat then it could be a td for them to win.
