This post isn't going to be a Dak versus Romo one. It’s about the team overall and how it’s built to support quality quarterback play. We’ve found a winning formula. We have the best O-line in the NFL and a new running back who likely will end up being one of the very best in the NFL. I love using the grind-it-out run game/ball control approach when so much of the league was pass happy. When you’re a clock hog, you keep your D off the field, keeping them fresh, and you keep the opponent’s offense off the field, unable to score. This is what worked in 2014, and I believe they’re doing it even better now.
With this formula, I believe several previous Cowboys quarterbacks would also have succeeded. Obviously, our two best ever, Staubach and Aikman, would have. In fact, that really was the same essential formula they both played under. Staubach was great. He was a freak of nature, an escape artist, and a poised an brilliant leader who could bring his team from behind to win. However, he did not do it all on his own. The teams he played on ground it out on the ground a lot with the likes of Duane Thomas, Calvin Hill, Robert Newhouse, and later Tony Dorsett. Staubach was one of the greatest ever. He may have been able to do well in a pass-happy system, but he didn’t have to, and we got 2 Super Bowl trophies in the end.
The same formula was used with Aikman. With him the team had one of the best O-lines in history and the best running back in team history in Emmitt Smith. Like Staubach, Aikman was an amazing talent that may have been able to play well on a pass happy team, but, like Staubach, he didn’t have to. With a balance between the run and the pass and a stellar D, Aikman played his part well, and three Super Bowl trophies were the result.
The greats could have done well on today’s team that is using basically the same formula. How about some of our very good, though not great, quarterbacks of the past?

I think any of these QBs could have done well on this team. This is what’s exciting. This team is built to help a QB succeed, not not force him to do everything himself. If Romo comes back and has most of what he had before, I think we can succeed. If we stick with Dak, I think we can succeed. Hell, I think even if we’re forced to play Sanchez we’ll still have a chance to win. This is the best position the team has been in for a long time. This team is even better built than the 2014 one was. You have to go back to the 90s to find a better one.
