I've been thinking all week about the renewed sense of pride I feel when I watch this team play. Mind you, I've been a Cowboy fan through the good times and the bad, through the Quincy and Campo years, and always wore my colors proudly.
Being a Boys fan over the past decade meant watching games on Sunday with timid anticipation, waiting for the other shoe to drop and have it all come crashing down. It meant watching the offense look like a Div-AA college squad always relying on the defense to bail them out, even during the playoff year of 2003. Every loss sucked, but you really couldn't get angry because the entire team was simply inept from the coaching staff down. You expected to lose, and were pleasantly surprised when they won.
Now, though, I brim with confidence whenever I watch the team take the field. They play the game as if they're going to execute perfectly on every single play. They pump each other up and you can tell they're a tightly knit group. Seeing Wade and Jason Garrett hollering with glee and pumping their fists on the sidelines after a score and seeing Romo and T.O. talking while grinning from ear to ear speaks volumes about these guys and their chemistry. It's a refreshing and needed change of pace after the iron dictatorship that was the Bill Parcells administration.
We aren't just beating teams - we're imposing our will on them. We just went into the house of the defending NFC champs and kicked them all over the turf. Rex Grossman or not, this was a team that went to the Super Bowl last year and we went into their house and embarrassed them. It feels so good not to fear 3rd down anymore. I don't have to hide my eyes from the TV on 3rd and 8 like I had to when Bledslow or Testaverde were taking the snaps. I don't have to settle for drives that stall out in the red-zone and end up with only a FG, or what was the case many times, a missed FG. Now I EXPECT touchdowns. And when we do have to kick a field goal, I don't cling to the edge of my seat begging God to please just let us make the kick.
In summation, the Dallas Cowboys are a force again. They play to win; they don't play not to lose. They go out there every Sunday and go for the throat, seemingly getting better as the game goes on. We haven't played with such intensity since the group known as "The Triplets" were on the field and a man named Jimmy was patrolling the sidelines. Enjoy it Cowboy fans, because this is the best team we've had in a decade.
