Priority numero uno: mash

If you are advocating bringing in an OG who is a vet or using a middle round pick on an OG, I agree.

But there are people advocating that we take an OG at 19. That would be insane.

Not at all. Garett/Linehans offense can only work with either an elite QB (Romo) or and elite OL. We don’t have Romo anymore. You don’t have an elite OL and this offense stinks.

Yes, it's insane.

Think about what you are saying. Despite the fact that we have a LT, a C and a RG who are all considered the best at their positions and all were 1st round picks and a RT who would have been a first round pick, the thing holding this OL back is that we haven't used a 1st round pick on the LG.

That it's going to be Hernandez or Wynn at 19 that makes this average line go to elite.

Holy hell people.

If he was Zack Martin all over again, do it. History is filled with players taken between 15 and 30 that should have been taken in the 4th round.

Whatever it takes, make the offensive line dominant again.

And then you'll be back here complaining that the defense lacks talent, etc.

With what they have invested in the OL already, they shouldn't have to then use the 19th pick on an OG to make the line elite.

Though I’d rather we spend our #19 overall on a DT, if drafting yet another O-lineman in the 1st round means we might occasionally try running the ball on 1st-and-goal inside the 5yd line, then I’m all for it.

If our offense can’t perform without 5 big investments made to the o line then we don’t have an offense at all...

Mash and Dallas Cowboys do not go well together. They have enough guys to do 6 seasons of M.A.S.H.

It doesn't matter how great the OL is, we could have Top-10 picks at every position on the OL but when the defense starts putting 8 in the box or blitzing because they don't respect the passing game, that great OL can't do anything.

When our defense gives up 30+ points and the offense has to put up points in a shootout, that great OL can't really control the line of scrimmage when the defense knows they can just tee off and pass rush every down.

We could run w/ 8 in the box if we wanted to. However, to do so you need a driveblocking FB.

Let's be great at something again.

Free agency and the draft are fast approaching, and the Cowboys have to avoid this tired plug-a-hole approach to every decision they make this time around. That's been the modus operandi with the team since Dez caught it in Green Bay.

The Cowboys biggest problem is, they aren't dominant at anything. They were, but they've since gotten cute, and now they're not.

Best offensive line in the NFL? Please. That looked average at best last year. Great passing team? No. Great running team? No. Great against the run or pass defensively? Heavens, no.

This team has a great running back, a decent offensive line, and otherwise, a bunch of guys named Bob. This team does nothing exceptionally well except punt and kick field goals, and even Dan Bailey suddenly looked like a mortal human with injuries and hiccups a year ago.

Enough. Sign or a draft a dominant guard this spring, or move La'el Collins back to guard and do the same at tackle.

Let's be a meat-eating, mashing running team again. That was what worked in 2016, and the absence of Ron Leary and even Doug Free really gutted the teeth from that run game this past season. Dallas can't throw it's way around that with this QB and these receivers, nor can it win low-scoring games. The run game must return to its previously dominating form.

Defense will be much the focus, and a receiver perhaps to boot. Of course. I'm not saying ignore the weaknesses altogether.

But first and foremost, the Cowboys have to return to being a dominant running team, and that means beefing the offensive line back up and getting Zeke into shape on and off the field. Priority numero uno.

Drafting Frederick, Martin, and Tyron wasn't sexy and it wasn't cute. More of that please.

EROD--- team needs to become proficient passing down field from the pocket to keep teams from loading an 8 man box....this is why they fired dooley and hired the receiver teacher....load 8 or more and get burned downfield will automatically drastically improve running game....i agree need better O lineman at LG and swing tackle...not a problem though....team is doing the right thing bettering receiving corps....do you have a better question to discuss???

Doesn't matter if you have Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, and Witten in his prime. If the QB can't and won't throw downfield with accuracy, it's wasted money.

A good guard would help Zeke, it would help Dak, and it would presumably help the receivers by definition. There's a domino effect here.

erod---now i totally agree with that assessment----i have been grumbling considerably and at a point last year every time Dak got ready to throw i'd flinch and wince....his fundamentals are so poor...and his throwing adjustment he made in offseason last year ( the overhand windmill motion ) was terrible guidance whoever got him to do that...hopefully it was Dooley and he is gone now......Daks regression in throwing mechanics scares me...
obviously he was trying to throw ball with more velocity....but did you see how many short area throws he threw way to hard and is part reason passes deflected off receivers hands?...plus his over compensating overhand throw release point must be perfect or it is either too high or low ...most of the time too high....that motion reduces ones control of the ball so much...also Dak has real difficulty transferring weight from back to front foot quickly or efficiently ...that is why it looks like he heaves the ball because the upper body is doing the work when we all know power and speed in throwing a ball ( not just football ) comes from the lower body...he was given horrible coaching on that...or he really is too much Tim Tebow liike?
and he wont ever be able to fix it

Yep.

I'll add that I noticed Dak started hearing ghosts in the pocket. He'd be looking downfield in a perfect pocket, then flinch and look around like he was expecting to get hit. Quarterbacks simply can't do that. I marvel at how elite QBs ignore the pass rush and focus downfield. After all the beatings Romo took, he'd still keep his eyes downfield.

If it was me, I'd never stop looking at the rush from the moment of the snap. LOL

erod---- Dak is built like a tank for a QB...but he took such a horrible beating in the Atlanta game he was never the same...not even close....it really both concerns me and ticks me off how the coaching staff allowed him to get pummeled out there and tanked the career of Green allowing him to continually get beaten so bad...that was real imcompetence...the whole fan base was up in arms over that...add that to the 3 different games we were 1st down goal to go and did not run Zeke once...and we paid dearly and lost 2 of those 3 games because of it...it is imcompetence...and in any other business or military outfit the buck stops at the one responsible....but Jerry fires the ones taking orders and expands the ones responsible for the failure....but Jerry is old and so rich he dont care...he just flies around his empire in the helicopter drinking "blue label"...can we really blame him?

An OG at 19? That would be ignoring the fact that we need top D players if we ever want to sniff a super bowl.
mr ks---- yes we need 1 tech and linebacker and safety...but also a quality receiver..and RG and swing tackle...i say dump Bryant get another number one...use money to get more premium free agents rather than paying all that dead money for the 3rd tier free agents we end up cutting...they must number one priority is upgrade the pro side managers...they do good in the college but the pro side not good

Every QB takes a beating in a game at some point. Some lose their nerve because of it. Jim Everett, Marc Bulger, David Carr, Dante Culpepper, Jake Plummer.......

I watched Troy Aikman get sacked nine times and get hit countless others against Philly. He got up and stood in the pocket until the Hall of Fame.

You either have that trait, or you don't.

well Dak looked more than just spooked to me...he was a different player all over the place and not different meaning better ...but worse

Exactly. The "fix the OL" mantra made sense a few years ago but now people are going overboard with it.

Go get a vet OG, go get a vet OT, draft some developmental OL in the mid-rounds. The OL would then be fine.

But using a prime pick to take another first round OL, an OG no less, is such a waste of resources at this point.
It's not wasting resources. It's adding them.
