J.J. Watt Play of the Week: Every week in this space I highlight a J.J. Watt play. He's the best defensive player in the league, and watching his tape is a treat. He is a force, even if the stat sheet doesn't always show it. The play I pulled out from last week's game with Dallas was the one where Tony Romo spun away from him for a sure sack to throw a touchdown pass to Terrance Williams.

Of course, that's the play that everybody was talking about. But I didn't pick that play to highlight his getting left grabbing for air. I picked it to show one of the true secrets to his success, which is his get-off at the line. Take a look at the play below and you will see a player who looks to beat the snap as he charges past Tyron Smith, one of the best left tackles in the league. But I ran the play back and forth a bunch of times and I think that Watt actually got off on the snap. That's amazing quickness for a man his size. Take a look.

So what do you think? Was he across the line before the snap? Or is he just that good? I think it's the latter.

Was it ever really a question? It's a tad late though a new week is upon us...

Bull. I haven't heard any other team or their affiliate(s) mention Watt sacking air. Not one word on the radio.

But I DO hear how great Watt is. I would have to agree but give credit where credit is due.

Romo is incredible. Dude has a pocket presence like no other. Which is weird, cause he hasn't had a pocket in years.

I know Romo punked Watt on that play

Sure looks like Watt tried to leg whip Romo because he got punked

As for his jump too hard to tell. I kept watching from the angle behind the line where you can see the ball on the ground. Sometimes it looked like he went before the snap and other times looked perfectly timed. If it that close then not going to complain either way. Great move by Watt.

I think that Watt was guessing the count and simply guessed correctly. They were in silent count and it is pretty easy to know about when the ball would go. I don't think he waited for the ball to move and went, I think he just guessed that it was about to go and was right. Probably some tell from either Frederick or Romo. Still, every defensive lineman in the league can do that and Watt does it consistently. He's a great player.

Ware did that on several occasions and was wrongly flagged for off-sides on some of them.

Watt looked like he timed it perfectly IMO just like Ware did in the past.

several? how about a couple of dozen during his career. And to me that is where Jerruh really failed to step up. By about 2008 he should have been haunting the league officials every week with their blown calls on ware. Between bogus offsides and getting TACKLED constantly without any holding calls.

So this is Jerry's fault too? Damn...

I think on the silent count, when Frederick raises his head, then he snaps the ball. Need to look at the play to be sure though. Or it is some signal to say, 1 count after head goes up.
Maybe watt picked up on that.

I noticed that a few years back, Costa would do same thing.
A Colts game last year, I think the Center would look to his left right before the snap.

The media slurping of Watt has gotten out of hand.

Did you watch their game last night? He had a great game.

I suppose he's a guy people either love or don't. To me he's a guy that lives up to his hype almost all of the time. Not last week though.

Oh, BS. If Romo doesn't float backwards 5-7 yards after taking the snap from shotgun, JJ is pushed back out of the play and nowhere near Romo.

Anytime you have a QB 10+ yards back from the LOS (as opposed to stepping up into the pocket), an edge rusher is likely to get to him. Tyron Smith isn't trying to block someone running that far behind where the QB should be.

Agreed, Ware was wrongly flagged several times and several tackles on him , even when right infront of the referee in Commanders game were not flagged.
