• The NFL owners did the right thing Tuesday in voting to make instant replay a permanent officiating tool. The owners also voted to change out the current replay equipment, which was outdated, and replace it with high-definition equipment. That will cost each team between $275,000 and $300,000. Next step: High definition glasses for the replay officials. Kidding, kidding.
• The league's owners will vote Wednesday whether to move the kickoff from the 30 to the 35 for the start of overtime. The idea is to take the coin toss luck out of determining the winner. The winner of the coin toss won the overtime 63.6-percent of the time in 2006. Hey, like I always say, if defense wins championships, shouldn't it be able to win in overtime? Get a stop, get the ball back, and win. The coin toss the ceases to matter.
• The NFL considered putting a transmitter into the helmet of one defensive player, but that was voted down by the league's owners. Part of the problem with putting a transmitter into the helmet of a defensive player is what happens when the sub package comes in and that player might go out? Or what happens when he's hurt? On offense, the quarterback, who has the transmitter, is always in the game.
• Marshall Faulk had a retirement announcement here Monday. Big deal. He really retired last season, but somehow finagled $1.25 million out of the Rams before really doing so. Faulk was a great player, and will be a definite Hall of Fame player, but he certainly wasn't the greatest when it came to dealing with the media. In fact, he was a pain in the ***. Now that he's in the media, it's funny to see his happy, smiling face.
