will make Hos and Theo happy, sort of
Here are two players who could be rising into the first round. One is Arizona corner Antoine Cason, a smooth cover player. The other is Arkansas State safety Tyrell Johnson.
Cason, whose father played in the NFL, was considered a potential high first-round pick before the 2007 season. But some scouts dropped him down because they didn't think he had great speed and he had trouble playing off coverage. Cason ran under 4.5 at his Pro Day workout and most scouts that I spoke to think he's more than capable of playing off. Cason could go 26th to Jacksonville.
Johnson is a solidly built 6-foot, 207-pound safety who has the speed to excel in coverage. With the modern game going to safeties who can run, Johnson's stock is on the rise. He might even be ahead of Miami's Kenny Phillips as the top safety in this draft.
• There has been some reports that Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib is "undraftable" because of character issues. According to a handful of coaches and personnel people that I queried, that's not the case.
"It's not like he's Pacman Jones," one coach said.
Talib has admitted and been open about failing three tests for marijuana at Kansas. He also had a high school incident involving a stolen computer and a pawn shop. But he hasn't hid from any of it.
The feeling is still that he'll go in the first round. How about Tampa Bay at No. 20?
• Dallas is said to be willing to trade the 28th pick in the first round for a veteran receiver. That's in part because the team feels there is a big drop on their board from 23 down.
The Cowboys pick 22nd and have their eyes on Arkansas running back Felix Jones. If they trade for a receiver, it will probably be Detroit's Roy Williams.
That will be risky. Why not just stay where they are and take Texas' receiver Limas Sweed? His wrist is healthy again and he's a younger version of Williams.
