Private detectives

Two weeks ago, my limo driver was also a PI. We were talking and he was telling me about the business. He does a lot of surveillance for insurance companies and doctors. He spends a lot of time on the computer with some good databases. Seems like there are some databases out there with a lot of info. He said he spends a lot of time hooking up his video equipment to make sure he gets a good shot. He said it was a lot of boredom with a few minutes of excitement. And you can't read or surf the net because you have to constantly monitor the person to catch him playing basketball or something while claiming disability.

He said most of the PIs work for a firm on salary. Very few have their own private practice. The doctor's malpractice insurance covers PI fees.

I poked around the Net. Seems like most of them emphasize their ability to do background checks on potential hires, so maybe that's where most of the money is these days.

I have dealt with two in the last 10 years.

Both acted and dressed like lawyers.

I guess the days of Magnum P.I. are over with.

It's a mystery to me
The game commences
For the usual fee
Plus expenses
Confidential information
It's in a diary
This is my investigation
It's not a public inquiry

I go checking out the report
Digging up the dirt
You get to meet all sorts
In this line of work
Treachery and treason
There's always an excuse for it
And when I find the reason
I still can't get used to it

And what have you got at the end of the day ?
What have you got to take away ?
A bottle of whisky and a new set of lies
blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes

Scarred for life
No compensation
Private investigations

Someone thought of Hall and Oates, next person Magnum ?

I thought of Charlie's Angels.

Hmm...
