Problems with USB devices

I have a strange problem with USB devices connected to my stationary computer. These work fine with my laptop so i don't think its a problem with the devices itself, but with the computer. I have a USB TV-tuner attached (Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2) and when watching TV on the computer it sort of looses its connection to the computer which results in the picture hangs and I have to restart the program. The same thing happens when watching DVDs on my USB connected DVD burner. This happens at totally random intervals, sometimes the only minutes between and sometimes hours. I'm thinking about buying a PCI-card with extra USB-ports but I tought I'd se if anyone has any clue as to what the problem is and if an extra PCI would solve the problem or not.

I don't know much about those devices but I'd have to say something is wrong with the USB port. Do you have another computer you can try it connecting it too?

Yes I have a laptop and everything works fine on that. Its only when I use my other computer that the probles occur. I think its some hardware issue with the USB ports on the motherboard or some controller on the motherboard. I guess I'll buy the PCI-card and hope it works.

Sounds like a good plan to me...good luck

It sounds like the power option in wondows is turning off the port there is a patch for it. If you do not have it installed (Windows XP solution)

Goto Start > All Programs > Right Click My Computer > Left Click Manage > Click on Device Manager > Click on Universal Serial Bus

>Right Click on USB Root Hub >Click Properties > got to Power Management Tab > Uncheck allow the computer to turn of the device to save power

Make sure you do this to every one that is a root hub.

What is happening is Microsoft put that in for USB devices but 99.9% of USB devices manage their own power so it cause conflicts and powers down the devices when it should not etc etc.

Turn off that option I bet your issue is solved

I went out and bought a NEC chipset PCI USB card with 4 USB ports and now everthing's working fine now. I guess it was some hardware issue with my motherboard.
