Honest question for those that go back at least to the early 90s, and especially those of you who saw the NFL during the Staubach years.

Are NFL players today as mature and professional as they were 25+ years ago?

Discuss.

Do you remember Hollywood Henderson?

As Billy Joel said "the good old days weren't always good and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems.

I understand. But Hollywood was an outlier like Aldon Smith. I'm talking about the NFL players in general.

They are held more accountable because of social media now a days. I partied with a few players from the 80s and 90s, believe me they did not hold back. I don't think it's changed much. Some can handle the money and fame and some can't.
We did hold our coaches more accountable though. IMO

Hard to know considering camera phones and social media weren't around. It's probably about the same. I'd like to think a majority of today's players are more aware because of this but,who knows.

Not really talking about off the field.

I'm talking about the way they go about their football business in practice and on game day.

More mature IMO. We simply didn't know about 80% of the foolishness that went on back then in the locker rooms and in the players personal lives. Compared to now where the players can't sneeze without it being reported in someone'a blog.

I dunno I've lost interest in this topic. I got nuthin

To me, in the 70s and 90s, the guys carried themselves like older professionals out there.

These days, everybody seems to act like college kids on the field. Like the XFL with talent.

Young dudes party and chase girls. That's not what I mean.

I'm talking how they go about football.
Today they try and earn that first contract, then worry about which endorsement deals they can score. Football IMHO isn’t as important as it used to be. They wanna get paid!

The biggest difference is the individualism this era. More of an instant gratification and" me "era mirroring our culture this generation.

This. Everything is documented 100× more these days.

hard to say given we were younger so of course they seemed more mature

Many of the guys today have nothing on Irvin, Henderson etc

I think they train in the offseason far more now than they used to, erod.

In the 70s, yes. Those guys all had offseason jobs. But the 90s teams trained this much.

I'm just referring to how they carry themselves on the field.

Imagine if everyone carried a phone in their pockets when Irving was playing and partying.

Same ****, different day.

Players make a lot more money today as well. I’m sure that buys a certain amount of entitlement that didn’t exist decades ago. Still—even though they weren’t paid as much, Star football players have been treated like royalty for quite some time.

In general, I’m sure it’s pretty similar. We just know more about players today and the NFL attempts to be more proactive about protecting their image.
