News: Proposal to ban tush push FAILS by two votes, sources say

Lol...when you can't fall back on logical points, just play the ole "it's just wrong" card

I.e. "I don't like it...wahhhhhhhh"
its called being able to make a judgement and then have the stones to stick by it

I can see that mystifies you

It has always been illegal to assist a ball carrier until 2000
still is in college football
you seem to be unable to understand that

If they thought “boring” made a difference wouldn’t they ban throwing the ball into the ground to stop the clock? That is a less than exciting play. Throwing the ball ten yards out of bounds is not exciting. If the league is fine with that crap, the “tush push” is far more exciting than those plays.
Yep, throw the ball away to avoid a sack, that so fun to watch. Don’t touch the QB or 15 yards, have a football play let’s ban it because it’s hard to stop.

right. But it's 2025. So you agree...it's legal.

I have no problem if they ban this play...as long as they ban similar plays: offensive linemen running down field to push RBs and WRs forward that have had their progress stopped....and possibly even gang tackles.

You never complained about those. Why? Because we were equally as good at doing them as other teams? Surely you don't want to keep THOSE pushes, and only target this one....right?

I’m not sure what the ban entailed. Was it going to be a penalty or was it about forward progress?

I’m not a fan of crashing into players to propel the pile forward either. I would just like to see forward progress stopped when it becomes player assisted, no penalty. Similar to how they stop forward progress when players are going backwards.

Even when a receiver is knocked back 2-3 yards on a tackle, they typically mark forward progress where contact was made.

it is just wrong and if you cannot see that then you are not a true fan of football
go watch rugby
The game’s very roots are in rugby and soccer. There was no uproar in 2005 when NFL owners changed the rule that disallowed assisting the ball carrier by pushing him from behind. Now that a team uses the rule to advantage it is all of a sudden not football. NCAA football followed suit in 2013. Guess what. It is a football play.

Interesting to note, back in 2005, the Philadelphia Eagles were one of the franchises that voted against changing the rule to now allow the ball carrier to be assisted by being pushed from behind. They were in the minority.

The tush push is a maul, not a scrum. No one is locking arms and driving. No one is holding the ball. No one is initiating a block. This is not a tush push. I played rugby for ten years after I played football. I do know the difference. If anything, it takes the concept of organized mass and applies it to line play.
"The tush push is a rugby scrum modified for use in the NFL."

The tush push utilities other players pushing the ball carrier forward. A rugby scrum employs players pushing their teammates forward.

M-o-d-i-f-i-e-d. The NFL would automatically disqualify players locking arms.

Both employ driving against their opponents.

M-o-d-i-f-i-e-d. The defense would not object to a tush push play, intentionally putting the ball on the ground, which is part of rugby.

M-o-d-i-f-i-e-d. Rugby players do not block players. Blocking occurs during every football possession.

Not trying to convince anyone. This is only a one-time response to any future disagreement concerning my thoughts on the tush push.

It was a lot closer this year than last year. Last year it was defeated by a huge margin I think, or maybe it was decided not to be voted on at all.

Only 2 votes this year. Next year it probably passes.
In 2005 when the owners voted on changing the existing rule that disallowed pushing the ball carrier to allowing it, Jerry Jones voted for the change. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie voted against changing the rule. Another reason for Eagles fans to cheer Jerry when he comes to Philly for games.

BS. No one really tried it
There are a LOT of examples of people pushing players prior to them getting rid of the rule. That reason is actually why they got rid of it because it was happening and they were not calling it so why not just get rid of it in the first place. The fact that you think that was not happening just tells me you were not watching much football prior to that rule change.

BS. No one really tried it
Actually the rule got removed because it was so hard to officiate. When a runner got held up downfield and a OL came and hit the mass was it aiding the runner or blocking the defender?

If I could average 3.5 yards a play from a tush push that's the only play I would run.

Fair enough. I'm just clarifying the difference between a scrum and a maul. A scrum has the ball on the ground, whereas a maul has the ball being carried by a player. That is a difference worth noting, but the vast majority of fans don't know the difference. I'm just trying to be accurate here, as I played both sports.
