Prospect Profile -- CB Mike Jenkins (pick 25)

Yeah... it made sense to jump ahead and ensure the pick. Just from an outsiders pov - that seemed to be my first thought

Kinda like Balt ensuring they get Flacco.... they wanted him. They made sure to get him.

I don't think Dallas expected him to be there and once he was they were not going to miss on him. Jenkins himself was suprised the Cowboys took him as he was expecting to go earlier than he did.

Cornerback | Senior | South Florida Mike Jenkins
Height: 5-101/4 | Weight: 197 | 40-Time: 4.40

Official Bio

Strengths:
Has very good size and bulk with long arms...A great athlete...Good timed speed and acceleration with a burst to close...Physical...Natural cover skills...Is versatile with experience at both corner and safety..Smooth with fluid hips and nice change of direction...Breaks on the ball quickly...Also offers some special teams potential.

Weaknesses:
...Toughness may be an issue[/B]

Positives: Has a well-built frame with good upper-body muscle tone, tight waist and hips and good lower-body thickness...

Make up your mind will ya... This kind of contradiction is inconsistent with the professional guidelines placed on scouts and the like...

I'm not concerned about Jenkins negatives.
They say he is physically gifted but does not put in the time to work on his technique...Sound like Rashean Mathis when he came out of college and Jacksonville drafted him. There was a secondary coach who turned him into a pro-bowler.
Dave Campo was his name.
Larry Brown during the ticket's draft coverage said Campo is a coach who preaches detail and described him as a technician coach who will get the physical ability to match up with the technique.

That Carlos Rogers comparison kind of ... really scares me.

Funny thing is it says that he has tight hips in the one where they say he is like Carlos Rodgers. Read the New Era Scouting report and its a little different. I'm going to guess that Dallas had scouted more like the New Era guys then the others. I think he is better then Rodgers, but time will tell.

My favorite point is how his height has been listed anywhere from 5'10" 1/8 to 6'0"...More than a little skewed, eh?

I suppose the only question marks has to go to his attitude and work ethic...Is he going to be coachable or is he going to be a headcase?

Yeah, that's what I've been wondering. Every site or publication have him listed different. It'd be nice to really know!!! Has anyone ever stood beside this guy to know?

Carlos Rogers CAN tackle. He's not the best but he's not the worst either. Whoever wrote that should watch more Commanders games. But he does get burnt alot. But enough about that bum...................Jenkins is going to be a very very good cornerback for the Cowboys. He actually reminds me of Newman alot.

Must guys that come from small schools usually needs extra technique. As long as he works at it and listens we should be ok

i dont know if i have my blue and silver glasses on...but on paper, Dallas probably has the best secondary group in the league.

Of course, the game isnt played on paper. There is no telling if the group will gel...but it's certainly not a weakness for this team any more.

I hear ya... it should be a QB's nightmare trying to throw into TNew, Pac, Henry, Jenkins coverage.

In all seriousness... all we need is a Ray Lewis type and we are set... maybe we get something close to that in Zack.

he was a solid pick--no ball skills? are they watching the same films I do? he is a quality corner with great speed and technique, and he has not played a pro game yet--he'll get better

or in a few years we will be shaking our heads and wondering why we drafted the loser

the draft is not an exact science

So........... did we overdraft him?

IMO, yes. Because Jerry had to move up to get him. Cason may not be as fast, but he is taller, consistently productive each year in school, has better football IQ, technique, work ethic and most of all, playmaking ability. But best of all, he would not have cost 2 picks, regardless if only late rounders.

Pacman, Jenkins, Scandrick are all similar type players. Uber-athletic short CBs w/huge character concerns.

Having Cason (plus 2 late round picks) to balance 2 of the above 3 would have been more preferable. Character counts, especially when Pacman was already in your back pocket.
