Proving Ground: Robert Brewster
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys
July, 9, 2010 Jul 910:34AM CTEmail Print Comments By Tim MacMahonFifth in a 10-part series focusing on young non-starters who have a lot to prove during training camp (series):

More than a year after he was drafted in the third round, offensive tackle Robert Brewster is still waiting to make his first real impression on the Cowboys’ coaching staff.

Oh, they’ve gotten to know Brewster. They like the approach he took to rehabbing after tearing a pectoral muscle last summer. They’re pleased with the way he’s worked to change his body, which is still a blubbery work in progress.

But they’ve yet to see him put on a pair of shoulder pads. That will finally happen in training camp.

The hope for the Brewster, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 320 pounds, is that he will develop into Dallas’ right tackle of the future. It’s also possible that he could move inside to guard, where Kyle Kosier is entering the final season of his contract.

But Brewster isn’t guaranteed anything. If he doesn’t perform well in training camp and the preseason, it’s possible that he could be pushed off the roster by sixth-round pick Sam Young.

Ok, I'm confused. I thought they for sure had Brewster pegged as a RT and Sam Young as a G. Or is it that both players are still a toss-up as to where they play?

And how does Sam young bump Brester off the roster if Brewster is a T and Young is a G? And what happens to Sam Young if Brewsted does not get bumped; does Young then get bumped by Brewster?

Yeah I don't really get what the point of this post is saying. It doesn't really seem to be any news or anything just some randomness.

It's likely that only one of them makes the roster, unless one makes it as THE backup guard, the other as the fourth tackle.

I thought they were looking at Young and Brewster at tackle. Obviously that could change but those are the rumors. Young looks awkward and that's an understatement. He did however do his job even though it wasn't pretty.

Not really a big fan of cutting Brewster after a year of being injured.

he needs another year to prove himself. not really his fault that he tore a pec.

thought the same thing, kinda harsh to let the kid go after coming off an injury year where he didn't even make it to training camp. I doubt seriously he gets cut, OL takes time to develop and barring any major injury, he will be given his 3 years to pan out.....

We kept that sorry of a player Jacob Rogers around for 2 years.....:(

Brewster will be interesting to watch when he first puts pads on. Rusty no doubt; but he should still be miles better then Sam Young. As for the poster that claimed he got the job done despite looking awkward, as a ND fan I can tell you HE DID NOT GET THE JOB DONE IN ANY MANNER. The ND O line was putrid the last three years; being the best rotten apple in a rotten barrel is not much praise.

Pat McQuistan is still on the team, the Cowboys just now booted Proctor.

I don't see them giving up on a third round pick, especially since it will essentially be his redshirt rookie year.

Brewster won't get cut. I thought MacMahon was smart enough to know we won't cut a 3rd rounder the next year. Look how long we gave Stanback.

But Stanback had massive tattooed boobs......

Makes all the difference.

They are. The Brewster as a guard is a speculative.

Wow so he's gone from being "Solid depth" to possibly get bumped off the team? Still kinda sick we didn't draft any OL earlier in the draft...

Brewster was supposed to have been a strong pick when selected. He also was a strong part of the projections into the most recent draft. I hardly think he quickly is ejected from strong considerations because some writer starts to stir the pot on points of rationalization and not founding in something leaking bits of information on a specific and young player. This further doesn't make sense to me...

until the pads come on we know nothing about brewster except that he seemed to rehab well and learned the system which is a good thing. Other then that we know squat about how good he will be.

I don't think there's any way he gets cut this season... unless he's just horrible.

The team made quite an investment (draft pick wise) when they chose him, and I feel like they'll want to give him at least this season to learn and develop and then make a decision on him in the 2011 training camp.

The only thing of concern for me is that Brewster's body is a "blubbery work in progress." He has made progress the article says. So that is good, but, still after one year, I expected him to be in better shape.

Young was a four-year starter at ND.

It will be good competition in camp between Brewster, McQ, and Young. I'm hoping Brewster shopws something in camp early and separates himself from this group and pushes for time vs Barron, Free and Columbo.

"A blubbery work in progress" are McMahon's words coming from the media; they're not coming from within the Dallas Cowboys organization, nor from their Training and Conditioning Department specifically. So let's just put this baseless media-driven opinion in some perseoctive please.
