Goodell; Pryor manipulated eligibility rules; suspension upheld
Commissioner Roger Goodell informed Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor on Friday that his five-game suspension for improperly manipulating the league's eligibility rules has been upheld.
Pryor gave up his final season of eligibility at Ohio State after an investigation into the team's memorabilia-for-cash scandal. He originally was barred from entering the supplemental draft, then was approved by Goodell with the proviso he must sit out five games.
In his decision on Pryor, excerpts of which were released on Friday, Goodell said Pryor's decision to leave Ohio State and avoid a five-game suspension "smacks of a calculated effort to manipulate our eligibility rules in a way that undermines the integrity of, and public confidence in, those rules."
"Based on Mr. Pryor's actions, I believe it is a fair conclusion that he intentionally took steps to ensure that he would be declared ineligible for further college play and would be able to enter the NFL via the Supplemental Draft," Goodell said. "Taken as a whole, I found that this conduct was tantamount to a deliberate manipulation of our eligibility rules in a way that distorts the underlying principles and calls into question the integrity of those rules."
