Weeden with the twos now. On my first playthrough I remember thinking the blocking was especially bad. Let's see what a closer look reveals.
Play 1: Wetzel gets his hands on the edge rusher and rides him upfield. OLB was able to angle in a bit but it didn't effect this play. Nwaneri looks like he did last game. Latches onto everything but has a mediocre anchor. Leary reaches out and end his mans rush. Parnell plays too passive. He sets up and waits for the DE to hit him. DE just ignores him and hits Weeden hard. Weeden has some toughness.
Play 2: Zone run right. Wetzel is supposed to kick out and set the edge. Nwaneri doesn't anchor particularly well and Wetzel doesn't help set the block well. A weak one armed shove without your base is not helping. DE is able to push towards the path of the runner. Bernadeau cuts off the NT easily and Leary finds a LB on the second level. The LBs and S are cheating up to stop runs so a lot of the slow pulls and the like are not getting out in front of people as easily. For all that it got 4 yards.
Play 3: Parnell gets his hands on Dumervil and ends his rush. He is showing effort following the bad play. His punch seems weak. I'd like to see him more like a boxer jab out to find the distance, step in and deliver a shorter sharp strike. As it is he is just sending out a series of jabs. Middle 3 present a nice wall. Wetzel gets his hands on the OLB and ride him upfield but I would like to see him kick the outside rush out wider. Short arms. These edges are not an ideal pocket. I cannot see downfield and Weeden throws it underneath with a quick throw to Dunbar short of a first down.
Punt Benford beats the double team and gets a hit on the returner disrupting the return. Didn't break down but he had only a step on his two would be blockers. Lawrence and someone wearing Murray's number force the returner oob.
Play 1: Its a screen but Crawford is quick. Wilber blitzes the B gap and both are more or less unimpeded. Crawford gets his hands up and as he right on top of Flacco and knocks down his pass attempt. Both Wilber and Crawford exhibit very good closing speed. Had the pass been completed the pass was going to the zone Wilber vacated with running room.
Play 2: Run left and Mincey not interested in moving. Sheds block at the los and makes tackle. Coleman got good push behind the play taking away a cut back. Carter and Durant do a nice job filling either side of Mincey had he missed his tackle with Barry Church assisting. This play had no chance.
Play 3: Nickel. Strongside stunts Crawford caves the OT and guard inside. Hayden is supposed to loop outside. He is sluggish to go and slow when he does go so Flacco has plenty of time. Mincey spin move is ineffective and Wilber cannot get the LT hands off him. Chop chop chop. Patmon in and with man coverage carries his WR across the formation. Follows him well on an out route short of the sticks and makes the tackle. Carter had underneath and Durant and Church set up zones right at the sticks.
Beasley muffs the punt and falls on it.
Play 1: The stretch left roll right doesn't work as the weakside OLB makes a bead for Weeden. 4th time is not the charm. they bracket Beasley but Weeden tries to fit it. Underneath guy tips the ball away. Had Hanna short and positive yardage on first down is nice. Don't mind trusting your arm and receivers though.
Play 2: run is off tackle and Parnell comes alive. He swipes the OLB upfield with a nice punch takes off upfield and ragdolls a S 10 yards upfield. Leary seals the DE inside and Randle follows Bernadeau through the path Parnell just dominated. Bernadeau is huge and Randle take advantage keeping wide of pursuit and setting up the block.
Pass 3: Street does a nice job blocking on the perimeter and Harris looks quick and athletic in space. Weeden plays a much simpler gameplan than Romo. All of his throws have been quick and on the money though.
Pass 4: Speak of the devil. Ravens end up sending all front 7 on delayed blitzes all told when their zones were ignored and Beasley . Weeden isn't able to step into the throw where only an elite touch pass beats the safety and still gets over inside leverage. There was Street with good position 1v1 dragging underneath. Ill advised throws with pressure up in your grill gets you interceptions.
Defense
Play 1: Selvie reads run and crushes the end. It's a middle run and he gets in on the tackle. Bishop is stood up and driven/turned two yards on a combo block. Crawford and Coleman are cut off outside from the play. Carter steps up into the A gap and stones the FB in the hole. Back kicks to the push created on Bishop where McClain and Wilber lead a pile. 3 yard gain.
Play 2: Selvie heads upfield and gets blocked out from the play. Coleman gets sealed outside at the poa. Bishop is hooked from behind and ridden upfield where he makes the tackle as the back tries to pass.Crawford beats the TE block and he crashes in but is slowed and takes too wide an angle.
Play 3: Selvie gets turfed on a down block where the LT just sits down on him. Coleman gets upfield but is sealed off from the crease. McClain makes valiant effort to meet the FB in the hole, overpower him and make the tackle forces the back to cut to the weakside away from his blocking. Carter near the poa cannot get push on or shed the block quick enough to prevent the first down when the back cuts outside. Crawford quickly sheds his block and pursues. Now we see a bit of the Marinelli gang tackling with Church Wilcox Carter and Crawford assisting.
Play 4: Play action slows the rush. Carter who would have filled the hole on the run just heads towards Flacco. Wilber and Carter react to the routes where Wilber picks up the RB running an out route and McClain sprints upfield. Flacco makes a nice throw to the RB who is quickly tackled for a 5 yard gain.
Play 5: Wilber sets a soft edge giving a wide lane when Crawford crashes in to help Coleman. McClain takes on a guard at the los outside Crawford which allows Carter to fill the hole for a short gain. Good teamwork on the inside.
Play 6: Wilber comes clean on a dip and rip. When you hit them first sometimes they cannot get their hands on you. Wilber is not a polished but its working. Selvie makes the RT look silly on an inside outside swim. Selvie has a lot of junk to his game. Both are unabated to the QB. McClain run blitzes and jams the RB coming out. Selvie puts his hands up as he closes and hits near Flacco's head I guess. roughing call converts third down.
Play 7: Mitchell has Jacoby Jones who takes an inside release then slants inside. Mitchell falls down on the cut and Wilcox overruns the route outside and has to turn and chase. McClain does not get very deep on his middle zone. Flacco makes a nice throw to an open receiver. Webb closes from the farside of the field which causes Jones to lose his footing presumably on a cut. No pass rush on a quick throw that goes for 20 yards.
Play 8: Crawford stunted inside and couldn't find a gap. McClain took a bad angle twisting behind him and was easy for the back to pick off. Selvie is beaten to the edge. Minter and Bishop are slow dancing and not using their hands. Lawrence is closing on his rush but has been slowed by the other back. Flacco finds Mitchell on T Smith on a go and throws a nice ball. Mitchell has few ball skills and doesn't look but he does make a swipe at the ball and WR hands when it comes in. Flacco gets a TD.
Randall wants to muff the kickoff but declines.
Play 1: Parnell shows poor awareness on the middle power zone play. He has the edge on the second level and is supposed to cut off pursuit. The ILB got depth to get wide of the wall and Parnell ends up not blocking him. LB quickly tackles Randle.
Play 2: Escobar gets a good block on OLB Upshaw. Parnell again in a middle zone and he ignores LB who just step around him. If you are on the second level any ILB you see needs a block. Leary reached his block. Bernadeau got submarined by the NT into Randles path. Nwaneri misses a block. Wetzel no issues getting his hands on the OLB and steering him away. Our guards whiff their ILB tackle Randle hard.
Play 3: Screen play. Parnell doesn't pick up a blitzing OLB at all. Whiffs animatedly. Jernigan sees it and goes after Randle immediately. Weeden throws it at Randles feet before OLB pushes him to the ground.
Bleh
Play 4: Parnell picks up the OLB. Clarke is softer than Bernadeau but they hold. Wetzel picks up the edge rush. Escobar runs a quick out and is wide open only a few yards deep and drops a catchable Weeden pass that is out in front.
Bleh
Heath with the nice tackle on the return. More Flacco.
Play 1: Patmon, Webb and Heath execute a three deep zone on the strong side which results in a throwaway from Flacco. Crawford is quicker and stronger than the OT and the OT plays like it but he does not know how to take advantage. More reps. Mincey and Bishop slow dance. Coleman uses the spin to no effect.
Play 2: Screen pass. Wilson spins in place. Bishop sees it and keeps the G from going downfield. Crawford doesn't set the OT up before using some moves. Coleman sees it too late. Webb is the first one there and does nothing. Hitchens tries to wrap up and fails but allows McClain to come in on the off balance runner and strip the ball.
Play 3: Webb corner blitzes and doesn't take a free path to the QB. Crawford cheated on the rush upfield to create the lane. Lawrence and McClain are sugaring the A gap. Lawrence is met by the RB quickly and stoned. McClain gets to his drop but doesn't see a receiver behind him. Between McClain and Webb's vacated zone, Flacco had his choice of targets. Did I mention Webb is soft?
Play 4: Flacco is getting the ball out really quickly before our guys have any chance to counter. It allows the OT to set up that deep but if Flacco holds the ball Crawford has a chance to get a sack on some of these attempts. mitchell gives up a completion with Wilcox arriving right before the ball to assist tackling.
Play 5: Jones on an out route gets a quick throw and Webb cannot tackle his cover before he runs oob. Mitchell fooled by a move upfield.
Play 6: McClain with the nice play to knock the ball away on a quick route to the TE in his middle zone. He struggled with some zones earlier but persevered.
Webb whiffs tackle on KO return
Play 1: Hitchens does a nice job noticing a TE from the far side of the formation come into his zone. He snuffs out the pass read then gets in position to get in front of the block for the rollout. OG blocks anyway and draws a flag.
Play 2: Bishop gives ground trying to cross the face of the C to hold up the OG. His effort is not enough as Hitchens gets cut off at the second level. Wilson's rush upfield completely gives up contain and the back is free to the outside when Coleman moves to the inside. Hamilton runs it down.
Play 3: Coleman shoves his man back several yards. Bishop is free to close down the line because the C has a hard on for McClain and tries to cheap shot him only to land a glancing blow. Hamilton comes down in run support and together with Bishop makes the tackle.
Play 4: Designed rollout has McClain chasing the QB to the sideline. WR comes back and neither Heath nor Patmon close from their drops to stop it at the sticks. Lawrence comes from a middle zone to help the tackle.
Play 5: McClain and Lawrence both go to fill the same gap and the runner cuts into the secondary where Hitchens is able to get off his block 9 yards downfield and make the tackle. Bad run fits. Bishop did shed his block but missed the tackle.
Play 6: Minter is held by the center who then flops on top on him eliciting a shove from Minter but no call. The hold works to get the first down but it doesn't stop Minter from taking down the ball carrier. Minter was likely cut because of his weight. He has a worse body than turnip Aladoneye.
Play 6: Bishop tries to fight through a double team and almost succeeds but the real problem here is that Wilson gets manahandled by the OT and Hitchens cannot get away from the TE's block.
Play 7: Guys get into their zones and the QB doesn't see anything he likes so it's dumped off to the RB. Orie Lemon misses a tackle after making the right read and Hamilton engages a blocker and also misses the tackle when he disengages. Mitchell gives ground off his block but does shed and tackle saving the TD.
Play 8: Guys do a good job not buying the play action and getting into their zones. QB tries to throw it high over Mitchell in his zone but it's too high and oob.
Play 9: Minter blown off the ball and decleated. Is deposited in McClains lap as the OG comes and blocks him because Minter only took a single block. Lawrence and Bush did a poor job getting off blocks at the poa as well. Easy TD.
Offense Weeden and the 2's
Play 1 Parnell kicks out the OLB. Goodin turns the DE inside. ILB comes up and Clutts hits him in the hole. Problem is Streets man isn't in man and ignores his route. He fills the hole and Randle spins away but is tackled because there is no room to run.
Play 2 Good pass pro Weeden finds Escobar out ahead of double coverage deep on a flag route and makes a good throw.
Play 3: Navjar nor Street can hold their blocks on the edge. Navjar's OLB is the first to make contact at the los. Nice reach by Nwaneri who cuts off the DE.. Nice seal on the second level by Wetzel. Randall shaking his head and I cannot blame him. Navjar called for holding to add insult to injury.
