Punt Returner?

I can't remember the last time we had a decent punt returner on the team.

Deion?
Swinton?

I've been looking at prospects that are capable of returning. Williams of Penn St was decent in college. But I'm not sure of the others. I read an earlier thread about Mike Wallace as a returner. I really haven't seen many Ol Miss games. All I see are nice numbers, but that doesn't mean he'd be a good returner...

Anyway....who are the players that are capable of upgrading the PR spot?

I'm guessing we'd have to draft a WR, CB, or safety to fill the position.

I was wondering about Knox. But does he have experience as a returner? Or...are we just looking at measurables?

Strengths: Shows explosive speed and quickness. Creates separation with speed. Is a smart route runner. Shows different speed on deep balls. Tracks balls well in the air and shows good hands to pluck them. Shows flexible knees and hips; adjusts his body to catch off-target throws and makes shoestring catches. Works hard and leads by example. Takes pride in his blocking and makes blocks downfield to free ball carriers. Has experience as a return man.

Weaknesses: Must improve upper- and lower-body strength. Gets held up at the line by more physical cornerbacks. Must improve at dropping weight and getting downhill out of his breaks. Must play stronger in traffic and after catches; does not break many tackles. Must prove he can make plays against tougher competition.

Bottom line: Knox is a small-school prospect who is not well known outside scouting circles. He gained more than 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons and is a deep threat, showing tremendous speed. He must improve his strength, but is a solid middle-round selection.

Knox's experience returning punts and kicks adds to his draft value.

He was a player that had a nice highlight reel....I just never saw him returning kicks or punts. He may be a guy to look at later in the draft.

He was a good WR in college but a very average return man.

The guys who have done well as punt returners include Mike Thomas and Joe Burnett mentioned above, DJ Moore out of Vandy, Robert Dunn out of Auburn.

Punt returners need elite quickness to make guys miss as well as being able to take a hit.

Kick returners need enough strength to break a tackle and good speed to get to the blockers.

Punt returners are seldom running around untouched so speed is not as important as its played up. They need the ability to juke a guy or two and then get forward.

PR is also alot about setting up your blocks, so you need good patience and vision
