Punt returns, fair catching at 6 yard line

I thought that was one key play where Crayton caught the punt as a fair catch and he was like at the 6 or 7 yard line. Aren't punt returners told to stand at the 10 and if it going over their head fake the fair catch and get out of the way or at least pummel the gunners trying to chase ball down to down it close to goal line.

We really got backed up there.

Seems to happen regularly, and I have heard announcers say one should never fair catch it within the 10, but maybe someone with more experience could fill me in there.

Also, Austin caught one pass before the half and didn't go out of bounds. Sometimes I think our team's players aren't that smart or are a bit slow in learning (if they are being coached on this stuff, I guess they should know it already, but sheesh).

It's pretty clear that Crayton listens to no one.

I think on that particular play, Crayton saw the Denver players and thought maybe they would down it even further than where he was.

Because when he caught it, there was Broncos player right behind him waiting for him to let it bounce.

All in all, I think there were other critical plays besides this one. The biggest one is the interception in the red zone.

So you're telling me you came off of that loss complaining about a fair catch? I guess it could be worse lol. It could've been another Romo or Roy thread.

I wasn't complaining about anything really. I was asking a question about what a punt returner is suppossed to do. The almost exact same thing happens later, and they claimed ball bounced in endzone instead of Crayton being able to run for a touchdown after it got batted back to him. Never did see a replay of that ball whether it truly hit endzone or not.

What I do see is Crayton SOMETIMES fielding punts as a FAIR CATCH around the 5 yard line. I think this is wrong to do, as how much worse can they really make it (4 yards or so I suppose) wherease most times it will likely carry into end zone. Hence the comment that I had "heard" many commentators say that players are coached not to catch within the 10, and the question as to whether this is standard or not.

I get it, you are crabby in your own way about the loss.

I noticed that too Larry. Good point. Could have gone either way. But my gut told me it would have bounced in the end zone.

your right. It was wrong. If crayton lets that go and the denver plays down it at the 3 instead of the 5, what is the difference? But if it bounces over their head and we get it at the 20 it is a huge difference.

there is no doubt someone told him not do do it again.
