I know that's the only way I'd do it. A deposit on a dog? No.
Then you wouldn't get one. Taking a deposit is the norm. Often breeders who have puppies available already of age don't have the best dogs. I'm not saying always, but that is often the case.

Is there really such a thing as "best dog"?

I guess it depends on what you want to do with it. Family pet, or some kind of competition-level show dog.

I dunno. I'm of the opinion that you just pick the dog that is right for you based on whatever criteria you set.

Sorry, not what I meant.

You'll find that "bad" breeders often produce inbred puppies w/ problems, both physical and mental. They are often not up to date on shots and such and just not well taken care of. Might have worms or other parasites.

We've heard some pretty bad horror stories from people buying from "non-reputable" breeders.

We breed specifically for personality and health. Absolutely zero inbreeding.

Good to hear. Is there any way to find or ensure you get a reputable breeder? I'm completely out in space when it comes to this topic. It seems like the Wild West, and all you ever really hear about are the horror stories of people running puppy mills.

Man, that's a tough one. I guess just go and meet them. Ask where their location is, and whether you can come out. If they refuse, they're most likely either not real or a bad place to get a puppy from.

Most of the people I know who come to us get referred by someone who actually bought a dog from them. Maybe ask around.

Hey, call a vet's office. Our vet refers us to people all the time.

From the wifey:

1. Ask for references.
2. Ask for updated pics and a video. (I can't imagine a breeder who doesn't do videos for their customers.)
3. Look for broken English and accents.(Apologies to any breeders who are competent but don't speak good English)

The wifey n I raise dachshunds. The scams right now are running rampant. And I mean, it's bad. People putting down deposits and paying for puppies, only to find out there is no puppy. At least one used a puppy pic we had on our site several years ago.

One lady paid for the puppy in full, and even had a flight number and such for the airlines. She went and waited at the airport, no puppy. Sad.

Just be warned.
I bought my dog from a breeder. Luckily, no scam. I've had her for 8 years and she's my riding buddy when I take my Stingray for a spin. That said, I've grown to appreciate the importance of adoption. I took two of my cats to get fixed at a local animal shelter and saw many poor abandoned dogs and cats. My heart broke. My next pets will come from a shelter, God willing.

I was very glad when the pres passed the law making animal cruelty a felony. Should've been all along.
