Originally signed by the cowboys on reserve squad, in 1967, this is where I think Tom Landry came up with the 3 year rule, if a player shows something in camp, you give him 3 years to groom. As some of you might know, coy bacon was with the rams fearsome foursome, and we let him go. Also, they are trying to push his 26 sacks to get the record, but what about if they do this, Harvey Martin's 26 one season record? Hostile wanted me to not put my thoughts in the post topic, so i put this here, because Bacon originally started in NFL with us, and potential season sack record broken by Bacon, but no such credit is being given to our Harvey Martin.

Push begins to put Coy Bacon in Canton

Plenty of guys deserve consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But not many become the subject of an online petition pushing their candidacy.

The Ironton (Oh.) Tribune reports that such an effort has commenced on behalf of defensive end Coy Bacon, a 14-year NFL veteran who played for the Cowboys, Rams, Chargers, Bengals, and Commanders. He was discovered by a Cowboys scout while playing for the semi-pro Charleston (W. Va.) Rockets in 1967.

A man named Glenn Robinson is pushing the effort on behalf of Bacon, who died two years ago at age 66.

"We hoping to get the NFL's attention," Robinson said. "Someone said it would be a good idea to get a petition going and I took it and ran.

"Now we're challenging everyone, especially all Bengals' fans, to sign the petition before the Hall of Fame game on August 8. We're in the process of getting a hard copy of the petition out there in different places for people to sign. We're hoping to get between 50,000 and 100,000 signatures."

Robinson also wants Bacon's 26 sacks in 1976, later reduced (reportedly) to 21.5, to be regarded as the NFL's single-season record.

The only problem? Sacks didn't become an official stat until 1982. Bacon last played in 1981.

He was a three-time Pro Bowler, but he never was an All-Pro. (The Tribune article incorrectly states that he was a three-time All-Pro.) Also, Bacon never appeared in a Super Bowl, ending his career a year before the Commanders won it all in 1982.

And so he's got a long way to go to make it to Canton. Last year's preliminary list included 16 defensive linemen, and Bacon wasn't among them.

Moreover, if Robinson hopes to develop some momentum via an online petition, he needs to be sure the petition actually works. As of this posting, the link supplied by the Tribune -- www.ipetitions.com/coybaconforthehall -- leads nowhere.

UPDATE: Here's the accurate link -- http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/coybaconforthehall/.

And no such credit is being given to Coy Bacon either. Your "they" looks like a guy named Glenn Robinson. He's pushing an online petition to elect a guy that was never even All-Pro once. Good luck with that.

It's about as relevent as me converting my website to a 'Phil Pozderic For HOF" petition site.

Coy Bacon belongs in what Peter King called the Hall of the Very Good, (and that's one of the few things I like about Peter King), but not the Hall of Fame. As the article said, he only made three Pro Bowls, and was never an all-pro. It's nice to have friends who push the guy's memory like this, but it should be directed toward a Rams-like Ring of Honor.

Tend to agree. I do remember him being a good player for the 4skins.

For the record, Coy Bacon never played for the Cowboys. He never made the regular season roster in Dallas. He was on the "reserve squad" in 1967 but never played a single down for us in a regular season game.

He was a very good player who had some excellent years but he does not deserve to be in the HoF and he certainly doesn't deserve to go in ahead of George Andrie, Harvey martin, or Ed "Too Tall" Jones.

My "unofficial" sack total list has him ranked as 14th all-time with 130.0, which is impressive, but he was only selected to 3 PBs and was never named 1st team all-pro. He had a knack for getting to the QB but was not a great DE overall.

In today's game he would be much more highly regarded as a pass-rusher but back in the 60s & 70s you needed to be well-rounded and play the run as well as rush the QB. Deacon Jones was the best pass rusher of his era but he was also outstanding against the run, which is why he was an 8-time pro-bowler and named to the 1st team AP 5 times.

I don't see him getting in and that's a good thing.

His name makes me think of the NFL Films piece where Steve Sabol is playing six degrees of coy bacon. He tried to play with his father Ed who keeps saying "six what? what are you talking about? this is stupid" I thought that was so funny.
