Here's what I think happened.
Last year, Jason Garrett and the Fords entered into a secret pact - to try and bring legitimacy back to Detroit. Or initiate it in Detroit, because it's up for debate as to whether it ever actually resided there.
Anyway, Garrett agreed to take the job but hatched a diabolical plan to swindle the Cowboys out of draft picks, hope, and butterfly kisses.
The Lions knew that Roy Williams had some problems, but wanted something for him, yet had a high asking price. So Garrett agreed to return to Dallas and make this deal happen. Jerry already had the idea in his head, but Garrett nurtured that idea, gave it wings.
Let's face it, Marinelli and Millen should have been fired last offseason - people were shocked when they weren't. But they held onto them to bridge the gap to their eventual savior and redeemer - RJ. Not only did RJ come to save them, he helped broker the deal to get them a ton of picks for a broken receiver. Now he's headed to Detroit, with the #1 pick, another #1 and a host of other picks, and he'll have tons of control with Millen gone.
People, this is just crazy enough to be true. Don't believe me? Ask yourself - Where did RJ go to school? Yeah. Ivy-league, people. He could pull this off.
