Q. How does Roger Staubach feel when he hears people say that Tony Romo or other quarterbacks remind them of him?
– Walt, New York
A. Roger gets a lot of questions about Tony, and while he admits that he's closer to Troy Aikman than he is to Tony, it's clear that Roger is a big fan of the current Cowboys quarterback. In fact, Roger and Troy were together last month as co–hosts of a North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee luncheon. Roger took time during the luncheon to answer queries about the Cowboys, including Tony Romo.
"I think Tony's headed in a great direction in his career and I think he's a really, really good quarterback," Roger told reporters. "I don't know him that well. Troy has spent more time with Tony. I'm a fan of Tony's as far as how he plays. He makes big plays, he does things right. And he's really a heck of a basketball player, so he's really competitive.
"I just think, as a quarterback, you've got to be able to put the pieces together. You can't be part of the distractions. I don't know what took place with some of the receivers saying that Jason (Witten) and Tony were spending too much time together throwing the ball, those kinds of things. You have to mature through that and kind of put it to the side and not let it bother you. I think he's just a young quarterback and certain things bother him that also leaves the locker room and goes on the field. I think he'll overcome that.
"I think he'll be like a Peyton Manning. It takes years. You're building your team and you get your guys behind you. I think Tony Romo is a franchise quarterback for the Cowboys and I think he'll continue to get better."
Q. I enjoy watching Troy Aikman on television when he broadcasts the Cowboys games. But please ask him why he wears his Super Bowl ring on his left ring finger instead of his wedding ring.
– Helen, 96 years old, Georgia
A. It's funny that you ask, Helen, because Troy was recently a guest on the Dunham & Miller sports radio show on KTCK "The Ticket" in Dallas and the same topic was broached.
"For those that notice it, I wear the Super Bowl ring when I'm on the air, then after we do the on–camera I put my wedding ring back on," explained Troy. "I think it's just one of those weird things where it maybe gives me more credibility in my analysis, and that's basically why I wear it. I would love to have it on my right ring finger, but the problem is that my knuckle is such that, having it banged around, I am not able to easily fit a ring on that finger. So the only finger that really works for me is my wedding ring finger. I had all three of my (Super Bowl) rings measured for that particular finger. I don't wear my Super Bowl rings all that often. When I got into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I was able to come up with a contraption that allowed me to wear (the Hall of Fame ring) on my right hand, so that one I do."
