. Alarm No. 1: QB beatings
This was another week of quarterback beat-downs. More and more defenses are employing the attitude of rushing the passer first and stopping the run second. John Teerlinck, the accomplished defensive line coach of the Colts, has employed that logic for years and with very good success.
Teams are absolutely pounding quarterbacks at an alarming rate, and when so many teams are calling pass plays, bad things will happen. For example, there were 104 passes called in the Green Bay-Washington game. Of the 26 teams that played on Sunday, 20 called 30 or more pass plays.
Ponder these numbers if you want to figure out for yourself where we're headed with the most important position on the field: There were 64 sacks and 120 hits on the QB on Sunday, to say nothing of the 65 times quarterbacks crossed the line of scrimmage and ran with the ball. At the present rate, we are going to see a lot more backup quarterbacks playing in games in the coming weeks.

Just another reason why Jason should be running the ball way more.

And why we need to invest heavily in the oline this offseason.

We need to use all 7 of our picks on the O-line.

Eh. They've actually been solid until the Tennessee game.

If Garret could find a way to employ a succesful run game, screen game, and quick passes other than bubble screens, the OLine would look even better. But he does nothing scheme-wise to slow down a pass rush.

Teams are just pinning their ears back and going after Tony on every play. I don't care if you have all-pros at every position, guys are going to get beat. If defenses give up a run, they give up a run and accept it but they know JG won't stick with it so continuing to rush the passer is worthwhile for them.

I don't know about all 7 but if we took a couple in the first few rounds I would be happy.

...curiously this is the same problem that is plaguing GB, IND, SD, NO...the tendency to want to ride the passing game into the ground...Minnesota is going to do the same thing eventually...watch how Peterson's carries will decrease going forward...the longer it takes for the Viking offense to respond the worse it will get until Rice returns...this new trend of playing the pass first is turning the league on it's ear this year...you can thank the 07 Patriots for the defensive adjustments...remember how many teams were undefeated through 5 games last year?...the teams that get back to balance are the ones who will prosper, the ones who insist on riding their quarterback will continue to struggle...
