QB contracts can cripple a franchise?

Keep making a fool of yourself, glad to see you're good at something. Now run off and pick out a new set of jammies cause your Tony Romo's are falling apart. As soon as the school bus stops you can hop off and check the laptop in your backpack.

lol

Is that a yes or a no on the sig? And to think I actually had a bit of grudging respect for you for at least putting that out there. Granted, it would have been funny watching you change the year every offseason, but at least it would have made it appear that at least you believe the garbage that comes out of your mouth.

It's funny, in the offseason when the worthless Romo-hating trolls were crying about the contract, I said can we at least wait until he has played ONE GAME under the contract before we judge it? Me and my big mouth...

I've been crying about the contract since it was handed out. So he has to play a game on the new contract before we can judge it? Like the last 8 years of Romo don't contribute towards our criticism on the contract.

Financially, it made no sense.

Garbage? What, that Tony would not be effective this year in the NFL? The fact that I've had a similar injury and the same surgery, and could not play football, or throw a football without pain and damage. The fact that Tony had a great release but a average arm to begin with? That Tony has never been consistently accurate beyond 10-15 yds down field? The fact that he was showing signs of deterioration last year, but most refused to acknowledge it.

The Cowboys have had 2 great QB's and another 4 who I truly appreciate for their service, Tony is one of those, but it's time to move on, it's what's best for the cowboys, not necessary for Tony and his rabid fans. If that's garbage to you....sorry.

Yes the sig is still there.

Yes, that garbage. Romo is going to be here a long time and your scouting report is silly. But I do give you props for the sig. We'll let it play out, and since you at least had the courage (unlike some) to put it out there, I won't hassle you when you change the sig annually.

And when you are proven to be wrong, you will be nowhere to be found, so who cares?

Besides, it's a silly thing to say anyway. Worst moves in franchise history? What does that even mean? As if this team is being held back from some great destiny by poor QB play or something. You can't fix this team with the meager amount of money you would save by replacing Romo with a cheaper, probably worse QB. You certainly can't trust the guy who would be charged with spending it.

Even you can admit Romo looked like a rookie out there yesterday. He was terrible.

How many times have we gone over this contract? The last two years had no guaranteed money (now has 2.5M in a restructure bonus of dead money in the 5th year).

This was a 4 year 65M dollar deal. Look around the league and tell me Romo's contract is out of line.

It astounds me that people don't know how to read NFL contracts by now.

The Romo contract is the reason Dallas will not contend. Its not so much as the numbers (and they are ridiculous) but more about the thought process of GM/Owner. They reward a guy because he sells tickets not because of 'real' on-field production.

he has "real" on-field production. the problem is the one every team faces. When your own top level players get long in the tooth, do you let them go, or do you overpay to stay?

It's easy to say, let them leave, but few teams make that decision with the QB.

I like tony romo but I think he is average qb at best one play off win is not much play off success and with his age I don't think there will be much but he is here now for a least two more years so yes its not good because they cannot get rid of the hc and rebuild

Judge the contract if you must. But get ready to eat crow when Romo busts a half dozen throws to the endzone for fans enjoyment, the teams pleasure and of course high fives from Jerry's Suite.

Kansas City just gave Alex Smith a 4 year $68M deal guaranteed $45M. He is 30 years old.

That is one the most undeserving contracts I've ever seen. You don't give that kind of money to care takers.

When I heard the GM talk about this contract he mentioned what a nice guy Alex Smith was several times. Stupid decision.

As far as Romo goes... Pretend this was another team like the Commanders or Eagles. As Cowboy fans we would be loving that their ageing QB just signed a monster contract and looks physically inferior to start the season than he ever has at any point in his career.

This is not a good situation we're in right now.

Ok you say move on. Now explain for us what we do with the remaining money owed to Tony and who and when do we bring this next QB in? And for the record you're willing to throw in the towel for 2014?

Rookie, nope!
He looked like an old man who needs glasses or better yet binoculars.
His arm strength is waning fast and he freezes at the first hint of pass rush like a deer caught in the headlights.
At this point Kitna would be a better choice...

Romo's new disease is called "Brain Freeze Itus" because he just slings the ball into the area with the most
opposing jerseys...HeHe!!!

Well, you can afford to draft a QB as the cost will be small for at least three years. If Tony cannot perform at a acceptable level, you have no choice. Let Weeden have the reigns and see where you get, IMO that's not tanking the season, that's just playing the hand that's dealt. Clearly the Cowboys will need to make a statement about Tony, that was a sad performance on many levels, some parts cannot be explained by rust.

We gave Romo $100m with $55m guaranteed. A contract like this means he HAS to perform for multiple years or you can cripple the franchise.

My question is: Is this the going rate for a QB? Is this something teams simply must do these days to retain a good QB?

Forget about his performance or whether you like Romo or not. My concern is with regards to injuries. Do teams simply need to play the dice and hope the QB does not get hurt?

For example, you sign a QB for a $30m bonus and he gets hurt the following year. Let's say it is a career ending injury. So you just need to take the $30m hit (or whatever the second year dead money is)??

I am trying to understand if we simply messed up this contract or if this is the cost of doing business in the NFL today. Romo was a good QB when we gave him the contract. We did not know he would get a nasty back injury.

SF and Seattle have

Do like sf and Seattle have done, draft a qb under the new salary rules if you hit on him it will set you up for 3 to 4 years. Now that you have a B plus qb you can spend the saved money to keep and acquire free agents to fortify the rest of your team.

The NFL wants you to believe that you must have a franchise QB because it fits well into their marketing plan. What happened to Peyton when he ran into a great overall team in the Super Bowl?

With a contract like Romo's it prevents you from fielding a great team. I wished we would've let him walk and started over just think how far ahead in the rebuild process we would be.

Funny thing is our personnel moves screams rebuilding but signing Romo screams ticket sales and staying relevant.

That's what happens when you have a gm/owner running things.

He has a higher chance to see the end of that contract then Romo has of seeing the end of his. If Romo was 30 and had a 4 year deal there wouldn't be that many people saying it was a dumb move
